Gravel Calculation FAQ
How is the amount of gravel calculated?
The calculator first determines the volume needed and then converts it to weight:
1. Area (sq ft) is calculated based on your shape and dimensions.
2. Volume (cu ft) = Area × (Depth in inches / 12).
3. Total Weight (lbs) = Volume (cu ft) × Gravel Density (lb/ft³).
4. Total Weight (tons) = Total Weight in pounds / 2000.
How deep should my gravel be?
The ideal depth depends on the project:
- Walkways/Paths: 2-4 inches is usually sufficient.
- Driveways: A base layer of 4-6 inches of larger crushed stone is recommended, followed by a 2-4 inch top layer of smaller, decorative gravel.
- Decorative Beds: 1-2 inches is often enough to cover the ground.
Why is gravel density important?
Gravel types have very different weights for the same volume. For example, a cubic foot of lightweight lava rock (approx. 90 lbs) weighs significantly less than a cubic foot of dense river rock (approx. 110 lbs). Since gravel is usually sold by weight (tons), selecting the correct density is crucial for an accurate cost and quantity estimate.
