How to use the scrap gold calculator

The calculator estimates the value of the fine gold contained in an item. It does not assume that the item's entire weight is pure gold, and it does not assume that a buyer pays the full metal value. Those two distinctions are essential. Most jewelry is an alloy, while stones, watch parts, steel springs, solder and other components may add weight without adding payable gold.

  1. Select the tested purity. Choose the karat and fineness mark that matches an assay or reliable hallmark. If the actual test result is different, use Custom fineness.
  2. Enter gross weight and its unit. Grams are common for jewelry. Troy ounces and pennyweights are also supported. Regular ounces are included to prevent a common conversion mistake.
  3. Subtract known non-gold weight. Enter the mass of removable stones, mechanisms or components in the same unit. If it is unknown, leave zero and treat the result as an upper estimate.
  4. Update the market price. Enter the price per fine troy ounce in your chosen currency. Confirm the timestamp and whether the quote is bid, ask, spot or a benchmark.
  5. Model the buyer's payable percentage. Enter the percentage of melt value offered. If the buyer quotes a total cash amount instead, compare that amount with the calculator's melt value to derive an effective percentage.
  6. Enter disclosed fixed deductions. Add assay, shipping, handling, refining or transaction fees if they are deducted after the percentage calculation.

This calculator is designed for used jewelry and scrap-selling decisions, including purity, non-gold mass and buyer deductions. Run more than one scenario. A useful range might combine a conservative tested fineness, a lower payout percentage and a reasonable non-gold deduction, then compare it with an optimistic case. The spread between the two results is more informative than a single figure based on uncertain assumptions.

What a scrap gold estimate does and does not mean

Fine-gold content is the estimated mass of elemental gold after applying the selected fineness to the payable alloy weight. Melt value is that fine-gold quantity multiplied by the entered market price. Estimated payout applies the entered buyer percentage and fees. These are related values, but they are not interchangeable.

Fine-gold content

A physical quantity derived from alloy mass and fineness. It can be expressed in grams or fine troy ounces.

Theoretical melt value

A market-price reference before refining losses, spreads, processing costs, buyer margin or taxes.

Possible payout

A scenario based on the percentage and deductions you enter. It is not a quote or guarantee.

The market price usually represents standardized wholesale metal, not a promise to purchase one small mixed item at that number. A buyer must verify content, aggregate material, manage price movement, refine or resell it, and cover operating costs. The difference between melt value and an offer is therefore expected, but the size and structure of the difference should be transparent.

The result also ignores any value from craftsmanship, brand, collectibility, gemstones, history or condition. A signed vintage piece can be worth much more intact than as refinery feed. Conversely, a plated item can look substantial but contain too little gold for the solid-alloy formula to apply. Use the calculator only after identifying what the object is.

Choose the right current gold price

Gold prices can move throughout the day. The prefilled USD 4,042.72 figure is a dated reference observed on July 24, 2026 at 01:35 GMT, when a market report placed XAU/USD near that level. It is included so the calculator produces an immediate example, not to imply a live quote. Update it before every valuation.

The London Bullion Market Association describes the LBMA Gold Price as an internationally recognized benchmark, set twice each business day at 10:30 and 15:00 London time in US dollars per troy ounce. Real-time market quotes can differ from the delayed benchmark, and retail sites may show bid, ask, midpoint or futures values. Record the source, value, currency and timestamp used.

Spot, benchmark, bid and ask

  • Spot price is a current wholesale-market reference for prompt settlement, but providers can display slightly different feeds.
  • Benchmark price is produced through a defined process at specified times, such as the LBMA auction price.
  • Bid is a price at which a market participant is prepared to buy; ask is a price at which one is prepared to sell.
  • Futures price relates to a standardized contract and delivery month. It is not automatically the same as immediate spot value.

For a seller estimating proceeds, a reputable bid-side or agreed settlement reference is usually more conservative than an ask price. Ask the buyer exactly which reference is used and when it is fixed. An attractive payout percentage can be misleading if it is applied to a lower internal base price.

Currency discipline

The calculator does not convert currencies. If EUR is selected, enter a gold price in euros per fine troy ounce and fees in euros. Do not select AED while leaving a USD price in the field. If converting a USD quote, use an exchange rate with the same timestamp and understand whether the buyer adds a foreign-exchange spread.

Do not hard-code a market price into a written offer comparison. Save the quote details instead. A one-percent gold-price move creates an approximately one-percent melt-value move when weight and purity are unchanged. If the transaction is delayed, ask whether the offer is locked or recalculated at settlement.

Understand karat, fineness and gold hallmarks

Karat measures gold as parts out of 24. An 18K alloy is theoretically 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, giving \(18/24=0.75\), or 75% gold. Millesimal fineness expresses gold as parts per thousand. A 750 mark means at least 750 parts gold per 1,000 parts of alloy under the applicable marking system.

Commercial fineness marks do not always equal the karat fraction to four decimals. Theoretical 14K is \(14/24=0.58333\ldots\), while 585 is a common legal or commercial fineness standard. The calculator labels both the karat description and the actual fineness fraction it applies. If an assay reports 583.3 rather than 585, enter 583.3 in Custom fineness.

A stamp is evidence, not absolute proof. Marks can be worn, incomplete, counterfeit or applied only to one component. Repairs and solder can alter overall composition. Mixed-metal objects may carry several marks. Professional buyers may use visual inspection, magnets, acid testing, electronic methods, X-ray fluorescence or a fire assay depending on value and required confidence.

The US Federal Trade Commission explains that a karat mark tells how much pure gold an alloy contains and distinguishes solid-gold alloy from plated, gold-filled, overlay and rolled-gold products. UK hallmarking guidance describes fineness in parts per thousand and provides examples such as 375 for 9-carat gold. Rules and tolerances vary by jurisdiction, so interpret marks in their geographic and historical context.

Gold weight units: grams, troy ounces and pennyweights

Precious-metal prices are conventionally quoted per troy ounce, not per ordinary avoirdupois ounce. NIST conversion tables give one troy ounce as 31.1034768 grams and one troy ounce as 20 pennyweights. Therefore, one pennyweight is 1.55517384 grams.

The ordinary ounce is smaller than the troy ounce. If a 10-ounce kitchen-scale reading is incorrectly treated as 10 troy ounces, value is overstated by about 9.7%. The calculator includes a regular-ounce option specifically so the conversion is explicit.

Weigh to a resolution appropriate to the lot. A kitchen scale that rounds to the nearest gram can create a large percentage error for a light ring. Test the scale with a suitable calibration mass, place it on a stable surface, tare the container and repeat the reading. If several items share the same tested fineness, weighing them together can reduce relative rounding error.

The scrap gold valuation formula

The calculator first converts gross weight and any deduction to grams. It then applies fineness, converts fine grams to troy ounces, multiplies by the entered market price and applies the modeled buyer terms.

\(F\) is the fineness fraction, \(P_{\mathrm{oz\,t}}\) is the entered price per fine troy ounce, \(R\) is the buyer payout percentage and \(D\) is the fixed deduction. The maximum functions prevent negative payable weight or payout when a deduction exceeds the entered amount.

Current-reference example: 10 g of 14K/585 gold

Assume 10.000 g gross weight, no stones, 585 fineness, USD 4,042.72 per fine troy ounce, an 85% payout assumption and no fixed fee.

If 1.2 g of that gross weight is stones and steel, payable alloy weight becomes 8.8 g. Fine-gold weight falls to 5.148 g, so both melt value and estimated payout fall by 12%. This demonstrates why entering gross jewelry weight without considering non-gold parts can overstate value.

Derive the effective payout from a real quote

If a buyer quotes a net amount, compare it with melt value after using the same tested weight, fineness, market price and timestamp:

Testing purity and accounting for non-gold parts

Purity uncertainty is often larger than calculator rounding. A difference between 14K/585 and 18K/750 changes fine-gold content by more than 28% for the same alloy weight. Do not choose a higher karat because the color looks rich; alloy color depends on the metals used and surface treatments.

Start with inspection

Use magnification to locate marks on ring interiors, clasps, earring posts, watch cases and chain tags. Record every symbol, not just a three-digit number. A maker's mark, assay-office mark, plating abbreviation or fraction can change interpretation. Check whether detachable parts carry a different mark.

Understand common test limitations

  • Magnet testing can identify some steel components but cannot prove that a nonmagnetic item is gold.
  • Acid testing can compare reaction behavior with reference standards, but surface plating, technique and sampling location matter.
  • Electronic testing can be quick, but calibration, surface condition and alloy composition affect results.
  • X-ray fluorescence is nondestructive and informative near the tested surface, but thick plating or nonrepresentative surfaces can mislead.
  • Fire assay can provide high confidence for a representative sample but is destructive and normally used in refining or laboratory contexts.

A reputable buyer should explain the test, allow you to observe where practical, and identify whether the offer uses the stamped fineness, a test result or a payable fineness reduced for uncertainty. For a valuable lot, an independent assay can be worth the cost.

Build confidence with a layered identification process

No single quick check answers every question. A sensible process moves from the least destructive evidence to more conclusive testing. Begin with provenance and a careful visual inspection. Compare the construction, wear pattern and marks with the claimed material. Weigh detachable groups separately. A magnet can help locate some base-metal springs or watch parts, but it is only a screening observation. If the lot remains valuable or uncertain, move to a qualified surface test, then to a representative assay when the economics justify it.

Sampling matters because jewelry is not always homogeneous. A repaired chain can contain links, solder and a clasp of different fineness. A ring may have been resized with lower-fineness material. A hollow object can have an internal reinforcement that a surface instrument does not see. Testing one polished spot and treating it as the composition of every component can create false precision. Ask what area was tested, whether coatings were removed, how many readings were taken and whether the result represents the entire payable lot.

Keep the original observations separate from the interpretation. For example, record “585 mark inside shank; 8.42 g on seller's scale; no magnetic attraction except clasp spring; two XRF readings of 57.9% and 58.2%” instead of writing only “14K.” This record makes it easier to understand why a buyer used a particular payable fineness and to compare a second test without relying on memory.

Measure weight without introducing avoidable error

Use a stable, level surface away from drafts and vibration. Let a portable scale acclimate to room conditions, confirm the display returns to zero and use the tare function only with an empty container already on the platform. A scale that displays 0.1 g steps may be adequate for a rough household estimate but can hide a meaningful fraction of a light earring or fine chain. For a high-value lot, use a suitable verified scale and record its displayed precision.

Repeat the measurement after removing and replacing the item. If repeated readings vary, do not select the highest number. Investigate the surface, battery, calibration, overload and air movement. Weigh a known check weight that falls near the lot's mass when one is available. A buyer's legal-for-trade obligations and calibration requirements depend on jurisdiction, so ask how the commercial scale is verified rather than assuming a home scale and a dealer scale must agree at every decimal place.

Record the unit beside every number. Writing “12.4” without “g” or “dwt” invites an expensive error. Preserve the original reading and perform conversion separately. Do not repeatedly convert a rounded result back and forth between units; start from the original measurement and retain enough digits for the calculation. The final cash estimate can be rounded to currency precision after the fine-gold calculation is complete.

Mixed lots deserve a simple inventory. Assign each group an identifier, likely fineness, gross weight, known component deduction and testing status. The sum of the group weights should reconcile with the total handed to a buyer. If stones are removed, record the pre-removal item weight, recovered stone weight, remaining metal weight and any unaccounted difference. This is both a calculation control and a chain-of-custody record.

What should be deducted?

Gemstones, pearls, enamel, glass, leather, resin, steel watch movements and non-gold findings can add gross weight. Some clasps contain steel springs even when the outer shell is gold alloy. Hollow items may include filler or reinforcement. Solder and repair material can have a different composition from the main item.

Do not remove stones or disassemble valuable jewelry without understanding the risk. A jeweler may charge for removal, and a gemstone can be chipped or lost. If the component weight is unknown, ask the buyer whether it is estimated, weighed after removal or excluded through an assay-based settlement. Model both zero deduction and a reasonable higher deduction to see the valuation range.

Plated and filled items require a different method

Gold-plated jewelry has a surface layer over base metal. Gold-filled, rolled-gold plate and overlay products also contain a gold layer bonded to another metal and may include a fraction in the mark. Their total object weight cannot be multiplied by the surface layer's karat fraction. The calculator's solid-alloy method is therefore inappropriate unless the actual gold-layer mass is known.

For example, “1/20 14K GF” describes a product whose gold-filled layer has a specified relationship to total metal weight and whose layer is 14K alloy; it does not mean the entire object is 14K. Ask a specialist refiner how such material is purchased.

A high advertised percentage does not guarantee the highest net payment. Buyers can use different weights, fineness assumptions, price references, settlement times and fee structures. Normalize every quote to the same basis.

Request an itemized written quote. It should show measured weight, unit, fineness, reference price, payable percentage, each deduction and net amount. Recalculate it independently. If a buyer will state only a final number, divide that number by your defensible melt estimate to see the effective rate.

Compare net proceeds, not percentages. Buyer A might offer 90% but deduct a USD 50 assay fee, while Buyer B offers 86% with no fee. For a small lot, Buyer B can pay more. For a larger lot, the higher percentage may dominate. The calculator's fee field makes this comparison visible.

Normalize quotes with a six-line worksheet

Write each quote on the same six lines: payable alloy weight in grams, payable fineness, fine-gold grams, reference price per fine troy ounce, gross amount before fixed fees and net amount after every fee. This layout exposes differences that a headline rate conceals. If a dealer quotes by pennyweight, convert the payable weight to grams for the worksheet but retain the original dwt figure beside it. If the dealer quotes a price per gram of 14K rather than a percentage of melt, multiply that unit price by payable 14K grams and compare the net result with the same melt-value reference.

A price per gram can be perfectly legitimate, but its meaning must be clear. “USD 70 per gram” could mean per gross gram of 14K alloy, per gram of fine gold, or a blended rate for a mixed lot. Those bases produce very different totals. Ask the buyer to label both numerator and denominator: currency per gross alloy gram at a named fineness, or currency per fine-gold gram. The calculator reports fine-gold content and payout per gross payable gram so you can check either presentation.

Next, align the price-fixing rule. One buyer may lock the gold price when the parcel is received, another after assay and another only after you accept the offer. A percentage based on Monday's price cannot be compared directly with a percentage based on Thursday's price if gold moved materially. Record the exact price used by each buyer and, where possible, recalculate both quotes against one common reference price to isolate the difference in commercial terms.

Finally, separate certain deductions from contingent deductions. A published processing fee is certain. A stone-removal estimate, assay adjustment or return-shipping charge may depend on the result or on your decision. Model the base case and the adverse case. For mail-in transactions, include outbound shipping, insurance, possible return cost and the time value of delayed settlement in your practical comparison even if those amounts do not appear on the refiner's invoice.

Find the break-even lot size for a fixed fee

When one buyer offers a higher payout percentage but charges a fixed fee, the better choice depends on melt value. Suppose Buyer A pays \(R_A\)% and charges \(D_A\), while Buyer B pays \(R_B\)% and charges \(D_B\). Their net offers are equal when:

If A pays 91% with an USD 80 fee and B pays 88% with no fee, the break-even melt value is \(80/0.03=\$2{,}666.67\). Below that value, B pays more; above it, A pays more, assuming all other inputs and terms are identical. This calculation is especially useful for small lots where a fixed fee consumes a large share of value.

Convenience also has value, but quantify it. An insured mail-in refinery may offer a stronger rate while introducing shipping time and counterparty risk. A local jeweler may pay less but test in front of you and settle immediately. Decide which risks and services matter after comparing the actual net amounts.

Prepare scrap gold before requesting quotes

  1. Establish ownership. Do not sell items whose ownership or authority to sell is uncertain. Gather receipts, estate documents or provenance for valuable pieces when available.
  2. Photograph and inventory everything. Record front, back, hallmarks, stones, damage and identifying details before handing over or shipping a lot.
  3. Separate by likely fineness. Keep 9K, 10K, 14K, 18K and higher-purity items in labeled groups. Isolate plated, filled and uncertain objects.
  4. Weigh each group. Record the scale, unit, resolution and reading. Repeat the measurement and keep a written total.
  5. Identify items with possible resale value. Designer signatures, period workmanship, collectible coins, intact watches and quality gemstones should be appraised before scrapping.
  6. Update the gold price. Capture a timestamped price in the currency and unit used by prospective buyers.
  7. Calculate a range. Use conservative and optimistic fineness, deduction and payout assumptions so one uncertain input does not masquerade as precision.
  8. Collect multiple comparable quotes. Ask every buyer the same questions and record written terms.

Decide what must happen before you lose the right to walk away

The most important transaction term may be the point of no return. Ask whether testing is destructive, whether the lot will be melted before you approve a final price, and what happens if you reject the assay or offer. A process that combines or melts the item can destroy identifying features, collector value and your ability to obtain another opinion. Written terms should state whether the seller must authorize destructive testing and whether rejected material is returned in its original form, as cut samples, as a mixed bar or not at all.

Read the definition of acceptance. Clicking a button, signing an intake form, failing to reply within a short window or depositing a payment may each count as acceptance under different terms. Confirm how long a quote remains open, whether the gold price continues to move during that window and who bears market risk. If a payment arrives automatically, understand whether cashing it ends the return option.

For estate, business or shared-property gold, verify who can authorize the sale and how proceeds must be documented. A favorable price does not cure a defective authority to sell. Keep the inventory, assay, invoice, identification of the buyer, payment record and any tax documentation together. If cost basis or inheritance value could matter, preserve purchase receipts and appraisal records rather than relying on the scrap invoice to reconstruct them later.

Evaluate the buyer, not only the number

A professional presentation is not proof of favorable terms. Check how long the buyer has operated under the same name, whether the stated address is real, how complaints are handled and which regulator or licensing body applies locally. Read recent independent reviews for recurring issues such as unexplained weight changes, pressure after mail-in delivery, slow returns or payments different from the agreed method. Treat extraordinary rates that are not tied to a clear price basis with caution.

Ask how the scale and test equipment are controlled and whether you will receive the actual results. For a material lot, ask who performs the final assay and how disputes are resolved. A refinery settlement based on a melt assay is a different service from a storefront purchase based on a quick surface test. Neither is automatically better; the appropriate process depends on lot size, homogeneity, urgency and your need for a reversible transaction.

Payment quality also matters. Confirm the amount, currency, timing, payee name and any bank, card or check fees. A slightly higher offer with a long, uncertain or reversible payment process can be worse than a lower amount settled securely. Never agree to misdescribe the metal, split a transaction to evade a requirement, transfer money back after an overpayment or share authentication codes. Stop if the transaction departs from the written terms.

If you ship gold

Review insurance limits, prohibited-item rules, tracking, packaging, chain of custody and the buyer's return policy. Some ordinary shipping insurance excludes precious metals or caps coverage. Do not assume a declared value is automatically insured. Photograph the packed contents and sealed package, retain the receipt and understand when title and price risk transfer.

If you sell in person

Scenario 1: 18K ring with a stone deduction

A ring weighs 8.400 g. A jeweler estimates the removable stone and non-gold setting insert at 0.650 g. The metal is tested at 750 fineness. Net alloy weight is \(8.400-0.650=7.750\) g, and fine gold is \(7.750\times0.750=5.8125\) g. Melt value is:

At an 88% modeled payout with a USD 10 fee, net proceeds are approximately \(\$755.49\times0.88-\$10=\$654.83\). Without the stone deduction, the estimate would be too high.

Scenario 2: 22K chain quoted in pennyweights

A chain weighs 12 dwt and tests at 916 fineness. Convert to grams: \(12\times1.55517384=18.6621\) g. Fine gold is \(18.6621\times0.916=17.0945\) g, or exactly 0.5496 fine troy ounces at the displayed precision. Melt value is about USD 2,221.88. At 90% and no fixed fee, the modeled payout is about USD 1,999.69.

Scenario 3: ordinary-ounce scale reading

A household scale shows 0.50 oz for a mixed 10K/417 lot. Because the scale uses ordinary ounces, gross weight is \(0.50\times28.349523125=14.1748\) g, not 15.5517 g. Assuming no deduction, fine gold is 5.911 g. Selecting “regular oz” in the calculator performs the correct conversion.

Scenario 4: compare two fee structures

A lot has USD 3,000 melt value. Buyer A advertises 91% and charges USD 80; Buyer B offers 88% without a fee. Buyer A pays \(3000\times0.91-80=\$2,650\). Buyer B pays \(3000\times0.88=\$2,640\). Buyer A is only USD 10 higher despite the three-point headline advantage. If the lot were much smaller, Buyer B could win.

Scenario 5: uncertain 14K item

A 20 g object is marked 14K but has not been tested and may contain a 2 g steel mechanism. An optimistic model uses 20 g and 585 fineness. A conservative model uses 18 g and 583.3 fineness. The fine-gold estimates are 11.70 g and about 10.50 g, a difference of roughly 10.3%. This spread should be resolved through testing and component assessment before negotiating.

Refining, recycling and responsible handling

Scrap gold can be refined and returned to productive use, reducing the need for newly mined material at the margin. However, refining is an industrial process involving sampling, separation, chemicals, energy and environmental controls. Do not attempt improvised chemical refining at home. Acids, fumes, metal compounds and contaminated waste can cause serious harm and may be regulated.

Choose buyers and refiners that explain their process, settlement method and responsible-sourcing practices.
