IB Diploma Programme Score Calculator
Use this IB Diploma Programme Score Calculator to add your six subject grades, HL and SL totals, TOK/EE core points, CAS completion, diploma pass checks, predicted-grade planning, and estimated UCAS Tariff points in one place.
Calculate Your IB Score
Enter your six IB subject grades from 1 to 7. Choose HL or SL for each subject, add TOK and Extended Essay grades, and mark CAS as complete or incomplete.
What Is an IB Diploma Programme Score Calculator?
An IB Diploma Programme Score Calculator helps students add their IB subject grades, core points, higher level totals, standard level totals, predicted grades, CAS status, and estimated UCAS Tariff points. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is scored out of 45 points. Six academic subjects are graded from 1 to 7, producing a maximum of 42 subject points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay can add up to 3 additional core points. CAS is required for the diploma but does not add numerical points.
This calculator is designed for IB students, parents, school counselors, tutors, and university applicants who want a clear score breakdown. It lets you enter all six IB subjects, mark each one as Higher Level or Standard Level, select actual and predicted grades, add TOK and EE grades, and check major diploma conditions. It also estimates UCAS Tariff points from the individual HL and SL subject grades.
The tool is useful for three situations. First, it helps students understand their current score. Second, it helps students plan predicted-grade targets. Third, it helps university applicants understand how subject choices, HL grades, SL grades, TOK, EE, and CAS interact. It does not replace official IB results, school coordinator guidance, university entry requirements, or UCAS rules, but it gives a practical and transparent calculation framework.
How to Use the IB Score Calculator
Enter each subject name, select whether it is HL or SL, and choose a grade from 1 to 7. Use the predicted grade column to plan a possible final result. Then choose your Theory of Knowledge grade and Extended Essay grade. Select whether CAS is complete or incomplete. Click calculate.
The calculator shows the total IB score, subject points, core points, HL total, SL total, predicted total, estimated UCAS points, and a diploma status check. The status check is based on common IB Diploma passing conditions, including minimum total points, CAS completion, no subject grade below 2, limits on low grades, HL point minimums, and SL point minimums.
For candidates taking four HL subjects, the IB rule counts the three highest HL grades for the minimum HL-point condition. This calculator handles that check automatically. For candidates taking two SL subjects, the SL minimum is adjusted to at least 5 points.

TOK and Extended Essay Core Points
The IB core includes Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay, and CAS. TOK and EE are graded from A to E and combine to award between 0 and 3 points. CAS is not graded numerically, but completion is required for the diploma.
| EE \ TOK | A | B | C | D | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | Failing condition |
| B | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | Failing condition |
| C | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 | Failing condition |
| D | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Failing condition |
| E | Failing condition | Failing condition | Failing condition | Failing condition | Failing condition |
A strong TOK/EE combination can raise a 42-subject-point result to the maximum 45. A weak core can reduce the total and, in the case of an E grade, create a failing condition. Students should treat TOK and EE as strategic parts of the diploma, not optional extras.
Diploma Passing Checks
A total of 24 points is the minimum numerical score for the IB Diploma, but reaching 24 alone is not enough. Students must also meet additional conditions. CAS must be completed. All six subjects, TOK, and EE must receive grades. No subject may have a grade below 2. There must be no more than two grade 2s. There must be no more than three grades of 3 or below. HL subjects must meet the minimum HL-point condition, and SL subjects must meet the minimum SL-point condition.
This calculator checks the major score-based conditions. It flags likely problems such as incomplete CAS, a grade 1, too many low grades, insufficient HL points, insufficient SL points, or a failing TOK/EE core condition. Because schools and coordinators apply official IB rules through formal systems, use this calculator as a planning tool and confirm final status with the school.
Predicted Grades and University Planning
Predicted grades are estimated grades submitted or discussed before final results. They are important for university applications, offers, scholarship discussions, and academic planning. This calculator includes a predicted-grade column so students can compare current score and target score.
For example, a student currently scoring 35 may need 38 predicted points for a competitive course. The calculator helps identify where those extra points may come from: raising a weak SL subject, strengthening HL performance, or improving the TOK/EE core. It also shows whether a high total hides a diploma-condition risk, such as low HL points.
Estimated UCAS Tariff Points
The UCAS Tariff translates many qualifications into a points system used by some UK universities and colleges. Not every course uses UCAS Tariff points; many selective courses ask for specific IB total scores and specific HL subject grades instead. This calculator estimates UCAS points from individual HL and SL subject grades.
| IB Grade | HL UCAS Points | SL UCAS Points |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 56 | 28 |
| 6 | 48 | 24 |
| 5 | 32 | 16 |
| 4 | 24 | 12 |
| 3 | 12 | 6 |
| 2 | 0 | 0 |
| 1 | 0 | 0 |
Always check the exact university course page. A course might require 36 points overall with 6,6,5 at HL rather than a simple tariff total. Some courses require particular subjects such as Mathematics AA HL, Biology HL, Chemistry HL, or English HL.
IB Score Worked Examples
Example 1: A student has subject grades 6, 5, 7, 6, 6, and 5. Subject points are:
If TOK is B and EE is C, the core gives 2 points. The total is:
Example 2: If all six subjects are grade 7 and TOK/EE produce 3 core points, the maximum score is:
Example 3: A student with 24 total points may still fail the diploma if CAS is incomplete, if any subject is grade 1, or if HL/SL minimum conditions are not satisfied. This is why a complete score calculator should check conditions, not just add points.
IB Score Calculator FAQs
What is the maximum IB Diploma score?
The maximum IB Diploma score is 45: six subjects worth up to 42 points plus up to 3 points from TOK and the Extended Essay.
How many points do you need to pass the IB Diploma?
The minimum total is 24 points, but students must also meet other conditions, including CAS completion, no subject grade below 2, low-grade limits, and HL/SL point requirements.
Does CAS add points?
No. CAS does not add numerical points, but it must be completed for the diploma.
How are TOK and EE points calculated?
TOK and EE grades from A to E are combined using the core points matrix. They can add 0, 1, 2, or 3 points, but an E grade can create a failing condition.
Are HL and SL equally counted in the 45-point total?
Yes. Each subject grade counts from 1 to 7 in the total. However, there are separate HL and SL minimum conditions for the diploma.
Can I use this for UCAS applications?
You can use the UCAS estimate for planning, but always check the official UCAS calculator and the exact university course entry requirements.
Important Note
This IB Diploma Programme Score Calculator is for educational planning only. It does not replace official IB results, school coordinator guidance, university admissions requirements, UCAS tools, or final diploma-award decisions.
