How STAAR English I Scoring Works

The raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly on the English I End-of-Course (EOC) assessment—multiple-choice items, short answers, editing, and revising tasks combined. That raw total is then converted to a scale score (approximately 1 000–5 000) so results remain comparable across test forms and years.

Cut scores for Approaches, Meets, and Masters grade level determine whether you pass, meet college-readiness standards, or demonstrate advanced mastery. Districts also use Student Growth measures—comparing your prior-year performance to this year’s scale score—to track academic progress.

Why Your Scale Score Matters

  • Graduation Requirement: English I EOC is 1 of 5 tests you must pass to earn a Texas high school diploma.
  • Accountability Ratings: Scores feed into your campus’s A–F rating and KPI dashboards.
  • College & Career: Many Texas colleges look for at least a Meets score (≥ 4 000) on English I/II to waive remediation.
