What Are SQA Past Papers?
The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is Scotland's national body for qualifications and assessments. Each year, the SQA publishes official past papers — also known as question papers — for all National Qualification (NQ) subjects across National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher levels. These past papers are a vital revision tool for students preparing for Scottish exams. They provide an authentic window into what the real examination looks like, the types of questions that examiners ask, and the level of detail expected in each answer.
SQA past papers typically include the question paper itself, an answer booklet template, and marking instructions (MI). The marking instructions are particularly valuable because they show students exactly what examiners are looking for in each answer, including the allocation of marks per point. Since 2014, when National 5 replaced Standard Grade as the primary secondary school qualification, the SQA has published digital question papers (DQPs) alongside traditional paper formats, making them more accessible to all learners.
For the academic year 2024–2025, students can access past papers dating back to 2015 — giving them up to ten years of authentic exam practice. This page brings together hundreds of SQA past papers across all three qualification levels and dozens of subjects, completely free of charge. Whether you are sitting National 5 Maths this May or preparing for Advanced Higher English literature, the resources below will help you revise smarter.
Why SQA Past Papers Are Essential for Exam Success
Practising with past papers is widely regarded as the single most effective revision strategy for Scottish qualifications. Educational research consistently demonstrates that retrieval practice — the act of recalling information under test conditions — produces significantly better long-term retention than passive study methods such as re-reading notes or highlighting textbooks. SQA past papers allow students to engage directly in this kind of active recall.
Beyond memory benefits, working through past papers builds exam technique. Students learn how to manage their time across different sections of the paper, understand the precise wording of command words (such as "describe," "explain," "evaluate," and "analyse"), and develop the ability to structure answers that align with the SQA marking scheme. Many students report that once they have completed three or four past papers under timed conditions, the format of the exam no longer feels unfamiliar, and their confidence increases dramatically.
Past papers also serve as a powerful diagnostic tool. After completing a paper, students can compare their answers against the marking instructions to identify specific topics or question types where they lost marks. This allows focused revision on genuine areas of weakness rather than spending time on material already well understood. Teachers frequently use past papers in classroom settings and as homework assignments to gauge student readiness ahead of the formal diet of exams each May.
Furthermore, the SQA occasionally signals changes to the style or emphasis of questions over a multi-year period. By reviewing papers from several consecutive years, students and teachers can spot trends — for example, an increasing number of data-analysis questions in National 5 Biology, or a shift toward longer critical-essay prompts in Higher English. Completing multiple past papers also helps students become familiar with the general layout and structure of each subject's exam. For instance, Higher Chemistry students learn that Section 1 always has 20 multiple-choice questions worth 20 marks, followed by a Section 2 with extended-response questions — a format that reduces anxiety and helps with time planning.
Understanding SQA Qualification Levels
The Scottish qualifications framework offers three main NQ levels that students encounter during S4–S6 at secondary school. Understanding the differences between these levels is essential for choosing the right past papers to practise:
National 5 (Nat 5): This is the core qualification typically taken in S4 (fourth year of secondary school), equivalent in difficulty to English GCSEs at grades 4–5. National 5 exams test a broad foundation of knowledge in each subject and usually consist of one or two papers (for example, a non-calculator and a calculator paper in Maths). To pass, students must achieve at least a D grade (band 7 or above). An A grade at National 5 is generally recommended before progressing to Higher.
Higher: Taken in S5 or S6, the Higher qualification is a step up in depth and analytical rigour. It is roughly equivalent to an English A-Level at AS standard and is the primary entry requirement for Scottish university admission. Higher papers typically demand more extended responses, critical analysis, and the application of knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios. For example, Higher English requires both a Reading for Understanding, Analysis, and Evaluation (RUAE) paper and a Critical Reading paper, while Higher Maths includes both non-calculator and calculator papers.
Advanced Higher (AH): This is the most challenging NQ qualification, broadly equivalent to a full A-Level in England or the first year of a university course. Advanced Higher is typically taken in S6 and involves a significant coursework component alongside the written exam. Many university courses accept Advanced Higher qualifications in lieu of first-year credits, making them especially valuable for motivated students.
All three levels follow the same examination diet, usually running from late April into June. Past papers from each level are published on the SQA website after each exam session and are made freely available as PDF downloads. It is worth noting that grade boundaries can vary from year to year depending on the difficulty of the paper. The SQA sets grade boundaries after the marking process is complete, which means a raw score of 60% might earn an A in a particularly challenging year but only a B in a more straightforward paper. This is another reason why practising across multiple years is valuable.
How to Use SQA Past Papers Effectively
Simply reading through a past paper is not enough to gain the full benefit. Here is a step-by-step approach to maximising the value of your SQA past paper practice:
Step 1 — Gather Your Materials: Before starting, download both the question paper and the corresponding marking instructions for the year and subject you want to practise. Have a timer, blank paper or an answer booklet, and any permitted equipment (e.g., a calculator for the Maths calculator paper, a data booklet for Chemistry) ready on your desk.
Step 2 — Simulate Exam Conditions: Set a timer for the exact duration of the exam (e.g., 1 hour 30 minutes for Higher Maths Paper 1) and attempt the paper without any notes, textbooks, or digital aids. Sit at a clear desk, avoid your phone, and treat the session as though it were the real exam day. This builds both stamina and focus.
Step 3 — Mark Your Answers Honestly: Once you have completed the paper (or when the timer runs out), open the marking instructions. Award yourself marks only where your answer fully matches the guidance. Pay close attention to "or any acceptable alternative" notes — these indicate the range of answers the SQA will credit. Record your total mark and calculate your percentage.
Step 4 — Analyse Your Mistakes: Go through every question you got wrong or only partially answered. Categorise your errors: Was it a knowledge gap (you did not know the content)? Was it a technique error (you knew the content but did not structure the answer correctly)? Or was it a time-management issue (you ran out of time)? This analysis tells you exactly what to focus on next.
Step 5 — Repeat and Track Progress: Aim to complete at least three to five past papers per subject in the weeks leading up to the exam. Keep a record of your marks and notice the trend. If your scores are rising, you are on the right track. If a particular topic keeps costing you marks, dedicate extra revision time to that area before attempting another paper.
For subjects with multiple components (such as listening and writing in languages, or Section 1 and Section 2 in sciences), practise each component separately first and then attempt a full paper under combined timing toward the end of your revision. It is also helpful to discuss tricky questions with classmates or a teacher after marking — sometimes the marking instructions reveal a valid approach that you had not considered.
Subjects Covered in SQA Past Papers
The SQA offers past papers across a remarkably wide range of subjects, reflecting the breadth of the Scottish curriculum. Below is a summary of the main subject groups you will find in the download table:
Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, and Engineering Science. Science papers typically include a multiple-choice section (Section 1) and an extended-answer section (Section 2).
Mathematics: Maths and Applications of Mathematics. These papers are split into non-calculator (Paper 1) and calculator (Paper 2) components.
Languages: English (RUAE plus Critical Reading), Gaelic, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Language papers usually include reading, writing, and listening components.
Humanities and Social Sciences: History, Geography, Modern Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Religious, Moral, and Philosophical Studies (RMPS), Classical Studies, and Politics.
Business and Computing: Business Management, Accounting, Administration and IT, Computing Science, and Economics.
Creative and Practical Subjects: Art and Design, Music, Music Technology, Drama, Media Studies, Design and Manufacture, Practical Electronics, Practical Cookery, Fashion and Textiles, Hospitality, and Physical Education (PE).
This page currently features the 2023 SQA Digital Question Papers (DQPs), which are interactive PDF versions of the official examination papers. DQPs were originally developed for candidates with additional support needs and replicate the full exam experience in a digitally accessible format. Please note that some 2022 and 2023 papers may reflect modifications made due to Covid-19 assessment adjustments, which temporarily narrowed the syllabus content in certain subjects.
SQA Marking Instructions & Answer Schemes
Marking instructions (often abbreviated as MI) are arguably just as important as the question papers themselves. Published by the SQA for every examination, the marking instructions provide the official criteria that examiners use to allocate marks.
Each marking instruction document is structured question-by-question, showing the expected answer, the number of marks available, and any acceptable alternative responses. For extended-response questions, the MI will often describe what a "good answer" looks like at each mark threshold — for instance, specifying that a four-mark "explain" question requires four distinct relevant points, each with development or a linked example.
When using marking instructions for self-assessment, keep these tips in mind. First, be honest with yourself: if the MI says "must mention osmosis," and you wrote "diffusion," do not award yourself the mark. Second, pay attention to qualifiers: words like "must," "or equivalent," and "any two from" tell you exactly what is required. Third, note any "common errors" or "do not accept" notes — these highlight mistakes that many students make, and being aware of them can prevent you from repeating those errors in the real exam.
If you are a teacher, marking instructions are invaluable for standardising your marking across a class or department. They also serve as excellent revision materials in their own right: simply reading through the MI for a paper you have already attempted can reinforce the key concepts and expected level of detail.
Tips for Using Past Papers on Exam Day
After weeks of practising with past papers, exam day can feel much less intimidating. Here are some practical tips to carry forward from your past-paper practice into the real examination hall:
Manage your time from the start. Before you begin writing, quickly scan the entire paper. Note the total number of questions, the marks allocated to each, and plan roughly how many minutes you can spend per mark. A common rule of thumb is approximately one minute per mark, leaving five to ten minutes for review at the end.
Read every question twice. Many marks are lost to misreading the question, especially when students confuse "describe" (state the facts) with "explain" (give reasons) or "evaluate" (weigh up arguments). The command word tells you the format of the answer the examiner expects.
Attempt every question. The SQA does not apply a penalty for incorrect answers in most papers. Even if you are unsure, writing something relevant can earn partial marks. This is especially true for show-that and calculation questions in Maths, where method marks are available even if the final answer is wrong.
Use diagrams and examples where appropriate. In science and geography papers, labelled diagrams can earn marks in their own right. In English critical essays, well-chosen quotations demonstrate engagement with the text.
Review your paper if time permits. Use the final minutes to check for silly errors — missed negative signs in Maths, incomplete sentences in English, or unanswered sub-parts.

Frequently Asked Questions About SQA Past Papers
SQA past papers are official examination papers published by the Scottish Qualifications Authority after each annual exam diet. They include question papers, answer booklets, and marking instructions for National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher qualifications. Students use them as a primary revision tool to prepare for exams across all subjects in the Scottish curriculum.
Official SQA past papers are published on the SQA website (sqa.org.uk) and are freely available as PDF downloads. This page on He Loves Math compiles all available papers in one convenient, searchable table so you can find your subject and level quickly without navigating multiple SQA pages.
Yes, all SQA past papers are completely free to download. The SQA publishes them as public documents. You do not need an account or subscription to access them. Simply click the PDF download button next to the paper you need in the table above.
After completing a past paper under timed conditions, open the corresponding marking instructions (MI) document. Compare your answers question-by-question against the MI, awarding marks only when your answer matches the criteria. Pay attention to phrases like "or any acceptable alternative" and "do not accept" to understand the range of acceptable responses.
National 5 is typically taken in S4 and is equivalent to English GCSEs at grades 4–5. Higher is taken in S5 or S6 and is equivalent to AS-Level standard — it is the main entry qualification for Scottish universities. Higher exams require deeper analysis, longer answers, and a more advanced understanding of the subject matter compared to National 5.
The SQA does not publish model answers in the traditional sense. Instead, they publish marking instructions (MI) for every paper, which detail the expected responses and mark allocation for each question. These marking instructions effectively serve as an answer guide and are the most authoritative resource for checking your work.
The SQA generally makes past papers available from 2015 onwards for National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher qualifications. This gives students up to ten years of exam practice. Note that papers from 2020 may not be available as formal exams were cancelled that year due to Covid-19, and 2021–2022 papers may cover a reduced syllabus.
Some 2022 and 2023 SQA past papers were modified to account for Covid-19 disruptions to learning. In certain subjects, the SQA narrowed the range of topics that could be examined or adjusted the paper structure. From 2024 onwards, papers have returned to the full pre-pandemic syllabus. When revising, it is a good idea to practise with both modified and full papers to ensure comprehensive coverage.
