Understanding Times Tables
Times tables, also known as multiplication tables, are the foundation of mathematics. Learning them helps with mental math, division, fractions, and algebra. Year 4 students (ages 8-9) in the UK are expected to know all times tables from 2 to 12.
Recommended Learning Order
Stage 1 - Easy Tables:
- 10 times table: Just add a zero (10, 20, 30...)
- 2 times table: Doubling numbers
- 5 times table: Always ends in 5 or 0
Stage 2 - Medium Tables:
- 4 times table: Double the 2 times table
- 9 times table: Digits add up to 9
- 3 times table: Add 3 each time
- 6 times table: Double the 3 times table
Stage 3 - Challenging Tables:
- 8 times table: Double the 4 times table
- 7 times table: Often considered the hardest

Common Tricks and Shortcuts
9 Times Table Trick:
For 9 × n, the tens digit is (n-1) and the digits add up to 9. Example: 9 × 7 = 63 (6+3=9)
11 Times Table Trick:
For numbers 1-9, just repeat the digit: 11 × 3 = 33, 11 × 7 = 77
Doubling Strategy:
4 times = double twice, 8 times = double three times
