Power (P) in physics is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred. It quantifies how quickly energy is used or generated.
- The standard SI unit of power is the Watt (W), which is equivalent to one Joule per second (J/s).
Common formulas for calculating power include:
- Power from Work and Time: This is the fundamental definition of average power.
P = W / t
(Where P is power, W is work done, and t is the time taken.) - Power from Force and Velocity (Mechanical Power):
- When force and velocity are in the same direction: P = F × v
- When there's an angle θ between constant force and constant velocity: P = F × v × cos(θ)
(Where F is force, v is velocity, and θ is the angle between the force and velocity vectors.)
- Electrical Power:
- From Current and Voltage: P = I × V
- From Current and Resistance: P = I² × R
- From Voltage and Resistance: P = V² / R
How to Use:
