Theory & Formulas

Pressure (P) is defined as the force applied perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area over which that force is distributed. It is a scalar quantity.

  • The standard SI unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa), which is equivalent to one Newton per square meter (N/m²).
  • Other common units include pounds per square inch (psi), atmospheres (atm), and millimeters of mercury (mmHg). This calculator focuses on Pascals.

Common formulas for calculating pressure include:

  • Pressure from Force and Area: This is the fundamental definition of pressure.

    P = F / A

    (Where P is pressure, F is the normal force applied, and A is the area over which the force is distributed.)
  • Pressure in a Fluid (Hydrostatic Pressure): This formula calculates the pressure exerted by a fluid at a certain depth due to gravity.

    P = ρ × g × h

    (Where P is pressure, ρ (rho) is the density of the fluid, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the depth or height of the fluid column.)

How to Use:

  1. Select Formula: Choose the pressure calculation method from the "Select Pressure Calculation Method" dropdown.
  2. Enter Known Values: Input the required values for the selected formula in the fields that appear. Ensure you use standard SI units as indicated (e.g., Newtons for Force, m² for Area, kg/m³ for Density, m for Height/Depth).
  3. Calculate: Click the "Calculate Pressure" button.
  4. View Result: The calculated Pressure (in Pascals), along with the formula used, will be displayed.
  5. Copy & Log: Use the "Copy Result" button and review the Action Log for input details and calculation steps.

For "Pressure in a Fluid", 'g' (acceleration due to gravity) defaults to 9.81 m/s² if not entered.

Calculation Result:

Action Log:
