πΎ Real Disk Capacity Calculator
Why is my disk smaller than advertised?
Storage device manufacturers (like those making HDDs and SSDs) usually market capacity using decimal (base-10) units (e.g., 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes = 1,000,000,000 Bytes). However, operating systems (like Windows, macOS, Linux) often report capacity using binary (base-2) units (e.g., 1 Gibibyte = 1024 Mebibytes = 1,073,741,824 Bytes). This calculator helps you see the difference.
How to Use:
- Enter Advertised Capacity: Input the capacity stated on the drive's packaging or specifications.
- Select Advertised Unit: Choose the unit (e.g., GB, TB) used by the manufacturer.
- Click Calculate: See the actual usable capacity as typically reported by an OS.

Step-by-Step Explanation:
Note: Actual usable space might be even less due to file system overhead, formatting, pre-installed software, and recovery partitions. This calculator shows the mathematical conversion difference only.
