The International Baccalaureate uses a comprehensive system that includes individual subject performance, core requirements like the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Each of your six IB subjects is graded on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). These grades are determined by your performance on both internal assessments (IAs), which are marked by your teachers and moderated by the IB, and external examinations. The total points from your six subjects can reach a maximum of 42.
The IB Diploma's core components can add up to 3 crucial bonus points to your total score. Your performance in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) are graded on a scale from A to E. These two grades are combined in the TOK/EE matrix to award your bonus points.
For example, achieving an 'A' in TOK and a 'B' in the Extended Essay will grant you the full 3 bonus points. Conversely, failing either component (grade E) means you are not eligible to receive the IB Diploma. CAS is not graded but requires successful completion. IB grade boundaries are the range of marks required to achieve a certain grade (1-7). These are not predetermined and can fluctuate each year based on student performance worldwide.
