Test Scoring FAQ

How is the final score calculated?

The score is calculated in several steps:
1. Correct Points = (Number of Correct Answers) × (Points per Correct Answer)
2. Incorrect Penalty = (Number of Incorrect Answers) × (Points per Incorrect Answer)
3. Raw Score = Correct Points + Incorrect Penalty
4. Total Possible Score = (Total Questions) × (Points per Correct Answer)
5. Final Percentage = (Raw Score / Total Possible Score) × 100

What is negative marking?

Negative marking is a scoring system where points are deducted for incorrect answers. This is common in competitive exams like the SAT, MCAT, and others to discourage random guessing. For example, if an incorrect answer is worth -0.25 points, you lose a quarter of a point for every wrong answer.

Why is my percentage score different from my percentage of correct answers?

When negative marking is used, your final percentage score will be lower than simply the percentage of questions you got right. This is because the penalty from incorrect answers reduces your total raw score before the final percentage is calculated. If there is no negative marking (i.e., incorrect answers are worth 0 points), then your percentage score will match the percentage of correct answers.
