How to use this IB Psychology grade calculator
This calculator answers a focused question: if your current Psychology performance were converted using the 2026 course weights and compared with a recent final boundary, what subject grade would it suggest? It is not a substitute for an official result, a teacher's marking judgment or the boundary eventually published for your own examination session. Its value lies in making your component marks comparable. A raw mark of 15 in the IA, for example, does not have the same effect at SL and HL because the IA is worth 25% at SL but 20% at HL.
Start by choosing SL or HL. Enter a realistic mark for every component, preferably from a timed mock marked against the correct rubric. Select a published 2025 session as a comparison. The large number is the estimated 1-7 subject grade, while the weighted percentage shows the total obtained after scaling each component to its official contribution. The note beneath the meter tells you how far the estimate lies from the current grade band and, where applicable, how many weighted points remain before the next grade.
Do not enter classroom percentages unless your teacher has already converted them to official raw marks. Paper 1 is out of 49 at both levels. Paper 2 is out of 22 at SL and 44 at HL. HL Paper 3 is out of 24, and the experimental-study IA is out of 22 at both levels. If a practice task includes only one part of a paper, scale it cautiously or wait until you have completed a full paper. A tiny sample can create a confident-looking but weak prediction.

IB Psychology assessment structure for 2026
May and November 2026 candidates complete the course introduced for first assessment in 2019. The official IB Psychology course overview identifies it as the course with last assessment in 2026. It examines three core approaches to understanding behaviour-the biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches-together with option content, research methods and ethical considerations. HL students also complete the approaches to researching behaviour component assessed through Paper 3. Both levels complete an internal experimental study.
This distinction matters because online searches increasingly surface materials for the redesigned Psychology course. According to the IB's Psychology curriculum update, that newer course began teaching in August 2025 and has its first assessment in May 2027. It reorganizes content around contexts and concepts and changes the external and internal assessment model. Those 2027 details must not be used to calculate a 2026 candidate's grade. Your examination registration, school course plan and teacher materials should all confirm which course you are taking, but the examination year is the clearest signal: a final Psychology examination in calendar year 2026 uses the structure below.

Why raw totals cannot simply be added
The components have different maxima and different percentage weights. At HL, adding 30/49, 28/44, 15/24 and 15/22 produces a raw sum of 88/139, but that fraction ignores the official 40:20:20:20 weighting. Each raw fraction must first be scaled to its contribution. At SL, Paper 1 alone contributes half of the final subject mark; at HL, its contribution falls to 40% because Paper 3 and a second option response enter the model.
Weighting explains why "one more raw mark" has a different value on each component. At SL, one Paper 1 mark is worth approximately \(50/49 \approx 1.020\) weighted points. One Paper 2 or IA mark is worth \(25/22 \approx 1.136\) weighted points. At HL, one Paper 1 mark is worth \(40/49 \approx 0.816\); one Paper 2 mark is worth \(20/44 \approx 0.455\); one Paper 3 mark is worth \(20/24 \approx 0.833\); and one IA mark is worth \(20/22 \approx 0.909\). This is useful for planning, but it does not mean you should neglect a lower-value component. A weak response can still surrender many raw marks at once.
The SL and HL grade formulas
The calculator converts every component into a proportion, multiplies it by the component weight, and adds the contributions. Let \(P_1\), \(P_2\), \(P_3\) and \(IA\) represent raw marks. Let \(S\) represent the weighted subject percentage before comparison with a boundary table.

Suppose an SL student earns 31/49 on Paper 1, 14/22 on Paper 2 and 15/22 on the IA. Paper 1 contributes \(31\times 50/49\approx31.63\). Paper 2 contributes \(14\times25/22\approx15.91\). The IA contributes \(15\times25/22\approx17.05\). The weighted total is therefore approximately \(64.59\%\). Under May 2025 Time Zone 1 final boundaries, that falls within Grade 6, whose lower boundary was 58.
Higher Level formula

For an HL example, take 32/49 on Paper 1, 28/44 on Paper 2, 15/24 on Paper 3 and 15/22 on the IA. The four contributions are approximately 26.12, 12.73, 12.50 and 13.64. Their sum is \(64.99\%\). Against the May 2025 Time Zone 1 HL final boundaries, that is a Grade 6 because the Grade 6 band began at 60 and Grade 7 began at 73.
Rounding and boundary comparisons
The interactive tool displays one decimal place so that you can see movement between practice attempts. Published final boundaries are whole-number bands. For planning, it is safer not to assume that a displayed 59.6 will automatically become 60 in the same way you expect. Schools and official systems may apply scaling and rounding within their assessment process, and the 2026 boundary itself is unknown. Aim beyond the threshold rather than designing a plan around a fraction of one point.
A sensible safety margin is three to five weighted points above a recent lower boundary. That margin is not an IB rule. It is a planning device that absorbs ordinary variation: a less familiar command term, a study you cannot recall precisely, stricter self-marking, or a boundary that shifts upward. Students near the Grade 7 threshold should be especially careful because top-band boundaries have moved across sessions and time zones.

Boundary values above reproduce the final subject bands published for the named 2025 examination sessions. A Grade 1 begins at 0 in every listed set. The upper limit for Grade 7 is 100.
What boundary variation tells you
For SL, the Grade 7 threshold in these 2025 sets ranges from 71 to 75. For HL, it ranges from 72 to 74. That difference is large enough to matter to a candidate sitting directly on a threshold, yet small enough that a robust plan can handle it. A student consistently scoring 77 has a stronger evidence base for a projected 7 than a student scoring 72 and selecting only the most favorable table.
Differences across time zones do not mean one region receives an inherently easier qualification. Papers can differ, and boundaries are part of maintaining comparable standards. Do not choose a low historical threshold and treat it as your entitlement. Use the strictest relevant recent threshold for goal setting, then use the range to express uncertainty honestly.
How to plan target marks for Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7
A grade target becomes useful only when translated into component behavior. "I need a 6" is too broad. "I will raise Paper 1 short answers by three marks, preserve a 15/22 IA, and make my option essay consistently reach the upper middle band" is actionable. Begin with your strict comparison boundary, add a safety margin, then distribute the required gain across components where evidence shows it is attainable.
Use a weighted-point gap
If an SL estimate is 55 and your planning threshold for Grade 6 is 61, the raw gap is not automatically six marks. It is six weighted points. One additional Paper 1 raw mark adds about 1.02 weighted points; one additional Paper 2 or IA raw mark adds about 1.14. Possible combinations include three extra Paper 1 marks and three extra Paper 2 marks, or a smaller exam gain combined with a realistic IA improvement before submission. After the IA is finalized, it should be treated as fixed and the entire gap allocated to examinations.
At HL, Paper 2 has 44 available marks but a 20% weight. Each raw Paper 2 mark is worth about 0.455 weighted points. Paper 3 and the IA have higher value per raw mark, but there are fewer marks available and high-level rubric improvements are not necessarily easy. Optimize the response quality you can actually change rather than chasing the largest mathematical multiplier in isolation.
Grade 4: secure coverage and answer the set task
A Grade 4 plan should prioritize completeness, accurate basic knowledge and direct responses to command terms. Learn at least one dependable study for each likely short-answer topic, know the purpose and basic findings, and practice linking the study to the named concept. For essays, a clear line of argument, relevant evidence and some evaluation are more valuable than an ambitious list of studies described inaccurately. On Paper 3, HL students should identify the method from the stimulus and connect methodological strengths or limitations to the study provided.
Grade 5: improve selection and explanation
Moving from 4 to 5 usually requires more than adding names and dates. Explanations must show how evidence answers the question. Select studies for their analytical value: one might illustrate a mechanism, another challenge generalizability, and a third support an alternative explanation. Use terminology precisely and keep evaluation relevant. A generic paragraph about small samples is weak unless you explain whose sample was small, why it mattered and how it limits the conclusion being discussed.
Grade 6: build consistent analysis
A Grade 6 candidate needs dependable performance across the paper, not one excellent rehearsed essay. In Paper 1, practice rapid retrieval across all three approaches because the short-answer section has compulsory questions. In longer responses, create an explicit argument and evaluate theories and evidence in relation to the prompt. At HL, Paper 3 preparation must be routine enough that unfamiliar stimulus details do not consume all your working memory.
Grade 7: create margin through precision
A Grade 7 target requires precision, depth and consistency. Strong answers define the scope of the question, select evidence economically, explain the evidence accurately, and use evaluation to reach justified judgments. They do not merely attach a memorized "critical thinking" paragraph. The best preparation is repeated closed-book writing followed by criterion-based diagnosis. If your current weighted estimate is near 72-75, a safety margin matters more than squeezing your forecast through one favorable historical boundary.
Paper 1: mastering the core approaches
Paper 1 is the largest external component: 50% of the SL grade and 40% of the HL grade. It lasts two hours and is worth 49 marks. Section A contains three compulsory short-answer questions, one associated with each core approach, worth nine marks each. Section B offers three extended-response questions, one from each approach, and you answer one for 22 marks. That structure rewards both breadth and depth. You cannot abandon an approach entirely because Section A is compulsory, but you can develop special strength for the Section B essay.
Short-answer questions: build focused evidence chains
A nine-mark response needs a direct answer, relevant psychological knowledge and a well-explained study or example. Begin by decoding the command term and content phrase. "Explain one..." invites a clear account of how or why. "Describe one..." asks for an accurate account without the same analytical burden, though evidence still needs to be connected. Define essential terms in a sentence, state the central mechanism, then use a study to demonstrate it.
A reliable chain is: claim, mechanism, evidence, link. The claim answers the question. The mechanism explains the psychological process. The evidence summarizes aim, method, relevant result and conclusion with only the detail required. The link explicitly shows why those findings support the claim. Students often lose force at the final step: they describe a famous experiment and assume its relevance is self-evident. One precise linking sentence can turn recall into explanation.
Prepare flexible study knowledge rather than dozens of isolated scripts. Build a matrix with syllabus topic, command-term variations, study, method, key finding, ethical point and useful evaluation. Extended response: answer a debate, not a memory test
A 22-mark extended response needs sustained focus on the question. Before writing, identify the content boundary, command term and implied debate. A prompt asking you to "discuss" one model needs a balanced, evidence-based consideration that arrives at a judgment. An "evaluate" prompt requires reasoned appraisal of strengths and limitations. A "to what extent" prompt asks you to establish a degree, not simply place two views side by side.
Use the introduction to define key terms, establish scope and state a defensible thesis. Body paragraphs should have distinct analytical purposes. One may establish support for the theory, one may challenge the inference, and another may consider an alternative or boundary condition. Study descriptions should be compressed around the facts that drive analysis. In the conclusion, answer the precise question and explain why the strongest evidence deserves more weight.
Paper 1 time management
A practical starting plan is roughly 20 minutes per short answer and about 55-60 minutes for the essay, leaving a few minutes to choose, plan and check. Your personal allocation should come from timed practice. If you repeatedly spend 27 minutes on the first short answer, the issue is not simply speed; you may be over-describing procedures. Conversely, a nine-minute answer may lack development. Record time and marks together so you can distinguish efficient writing from underdeveloped writing.

Paper 2: option essays at SL and HL
Paper 2 assesses option content. SL students study one option and answer one extended-response question for 22 marks in one hour. HL students study two options and answer one question from each option; the paper is worth 44 marks and lasts two hours. The options in the 2026 course are abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, and the psychology of human relationships.
The calculation can obscure an important difference. At SL, the single Paper 2 essay is worth 25% of the subject grade. A weak day has a concentrated effect. At HL, two essays together are worth 20%, so each individual 22-mark answer contributes approximately 10% of the final grade. HL breadth is greater, but one weak option essay is less dominant in the overall calculation than the only SL option essay.
Build option knowledge around questions
Organize notes by syllabus question and debate, not by textbook chapter. For each topic, create a one-page argument map: core explanation or model, two or three useful studies, key methodological issues, cultural or ethical considerations, and a conclusion that can adapt to different command terms. Then test whether the same material works for "evaluate," "discuss" and "to what extent." If every outline looks identical, you are not responding closely enough to command terms.
Option essays reward specificity. In abnormal psychology, for example, discussion of diagnosis should connect reliability, validity, cultural concepts of distress and consequences for classification rather than reciting generic limitations. In developmental psychology, evidence should be related to developmental change and the conditions under which findings may generalize. In health psychology, connect behavior, cognition, biology and context instead of treating health decisions as purely individual. In human relationships, distinguish findings about formation, maintenance, communication, conflict or group dynamics as the question requires.

Use evidence comparatively
An essay becomes analytical when evidence performs different jobs. Study A may support an explanation under controlled conditions. Study B may show that the effect occurs in a natural context. Study C may identify a cultural limitation or an alternative mechanism. Comparing those contributions is stronger than narrating three studies independently. Ask after each paragraph: what did this evidence change about my answer to the question?
Evaluation should operate at several levels. Methodological appraisal asks whether the design supports the inference. Theoretical appraisal asks how much of the behavior the explanation accounts for. Population validity asks whom the claim applies to. Ethical analysis asks whether knowledge was obtained and applied responsibly. Keep these levels connected to the prompt. A study's use of students is not automatically fatal; explain how the sample characteristics interact with the behavior being generalized.
HL Paper 3: research methods in context
Paper 3 is an HL-only one-hour paper worth 24 marks and 20% of the subject grade. It presents an unseen stimulus describing a qualitative research study and asks three compulsory questions. The challenge is application: candidates must use research-methods knowledge to interpret the study in front of them. Memorizing definitions without practicing stimulus annotation produces fragile performance.
Read once for the research story and again for methodological signals. Mark the aim, participant selection, setting, data-collection method, researcher role, analytic procedure, ethical issues and any steps taken to improve credibility. Separate facts stated in the stimulus from reasonable inferences. When a question asks you to identify or explain a method, support the answer with exact features of the study rather than pasting a generic definition.
Question 1: identify the method and characteristics
Know the defining features of interviews, observations and case studies, including relevant variants. A semi-structured interview follows prepared themes while allowing probing and follow-up; a focus group produces interaction among participants as well as responses to the researcher; participant observation changes the researcher's relationship to the setting. Identification earns its force from evidence: cite what researchers actually did in the stimulus.
Question 2: ethical considerations
Ethics answers must be contextual. Informed consent, withdrawal, anonymity, confidentiality, protection from harm, deception and debriefing are not a checklist to dump onto every study. Identify the issue most relevant to the participants and topic, explain the risk, and propose a feasible safeguard. Sensitive interviews may require privacy, clear limits to confidentiality, trained support and a plan for distress. For the extended response, develop a balanced argument about the stated method or issue using the stimulus throughout. Consider credibility, reflexivity, triangulation, researcher bias, participant expectations, transferability and the fit between method and aim. Qualitative research should not be judged only by experimental criteria. Rich, contextual data can be a strength even when statistical generalization is not intended. Introduction
Build a focused rationale from a relevant theory or model to the study being replicated. Explain the psychological mechanism rather than offering a long historical survey. State the aim and hypotheses in a form that matches the design and planned analysis. Variables should be operationalized consistently. If the dependent variable is recall score, specify what counts as a correct item and how the score is calculated.
Exploration
Describe the design, sampling, participant characteristics, materials, controls and procedure with reasons for important choices. Explain how the group addressed ethics. Methodological justification matters: why was an independent-measures or repeated-measures design appropriate? How did standardization reduce unwanted variation? What possible confound remained? The report should be replicable without drowning the reader in irrelevant administration.
Analysis
Present descriptive statistics suited to the level and distribution of the data. A table or graph must communicate, not decorate. Give titles, labels, units and consistent precision. Explain what the descriptive results show before discussing the inferential test. Select the inferential test based on design, data and the comparison or relationship being examined. Report the outcome in the format taught by your school and connect it to the hypothesis without claiming that statistical significance proves a theory true.
Evaluation
Return to the theory, findings and design. Discuss strengths and limitations that materially affected your result. A useful limitation identifies the feature, explains its likely effect on data or inference, and proposes a realistic modification. "The sample was small" is incomplete. A better evaluation explains how sample size affected reliability or sensitivity, whether the participant pool restricts transfer, and how a larger feasible sample could be recruited under the same ethical constraints.
Protect the IA from avoidable losses
- Use one set of variable names consistently from hypothesis to evaluation.
- Check that graphs and tables agree with the raw and processed data.
- Explain why each inferential procedure fits the design and data.
- Distinguish a null-hypothesis decision from a claim about theoretical truth.
- Connect every major limitation to a likely consequence.
- Follow your school's current academic-integrity and citation requirements.
- Leave enough time for independent proofreading within permitted teacher-feedback rules.
Because one IA raw mark is worth about 1.14 weighted points at SL and 0.91 at HL, careful criterion-level revision can make a meaningful difference before submission. Research methods, ethics and statistics you need to understand
Research methods are not an isolated Paper 3 topic. They shape how evidence is explained and evaluated across Psychology. Strong students ask three questions whenever they learn a study: what did the researchers do, what inference does the design permit, and what limits the confidence or scope of that inference? This habit makes evaluation more precise and reduces dependence on memorized generic criticism.
Experiments and causal inference
In a true experiment, researchers manipulate an independent variable, measure a dependent variable and attempt to control alternatives. Random allocation can reduce systematic participant differences between conditions. Standardization makes treatment more consistent. These features support causal inference, but causal strength can trade off against ecological validity if the task or environment is artificial. Field experiments may feel more natural but offer less control.
Distinguish independent measures, repeated measures and matched pairs. Independent measures avoid order effects but can suffer participant variability. Repeated measures controls participant variability but may introduce practice, fatigue or demand effects; counterbalancing can reduce order effects. Matched-pairs designs attempt to balance relevant characteristics but depend on the quality of matching and require more recruitment effort.
Correlational research
Correlation measures the direction and strength of association between variables. It can investigate naturally occurring variables that would be impossible or unethical to manipulate, but it does not by itself establish causation. Directionality and third variables remain plausible. A strong answer does not stop at "correlation is not causation"; it identifies a credible alternative explanation in the context of the study.
If \(x_i\) and \(y_i\) are paired scores, a correlation coefficient summarizes how they co-vary. The exact procedure depends on the data and assumptions. The conceptual point is that a coefficient near \(+1\) indicates a strong positive monotonic or linear relationship under the chosen statistic, a coefficient near \(-1\) a strong negative relationship, and a value near zero little of the type of association measured. It says nothing automatically about why the relationship exists.
Descriptive statistics

The mean uses every score and is useful for interval or ratio data when extreme values do not distort the center. The median is the middle ordered value and is more resistant to outliers. The mode is the most frequent value and can be used with categorical data. Select a measure because it represents the data appropriately, not because it is the one you remember first.

A small standard deviation indicates scores clustered near the mean; a large one indicates greater dispersion. The range is simpler but depends only on the extremes. In an IA, interpret what the spread suggests about participant consistency and overlap rather than reporting a statistic without meaning.
Qualitative methods and credibility
Interviews can capture meaning, experience and participant language. Observations can examine behavior in context. Case studies can integrate multiple sources to understand a bounded individual, group or event. Their quality depends on method, transparency and analysis. Credibility may be strengthened through triangulation, careful documentation, participant checks where appropriate, reflexivity and multiple researchers examining interpretations.
Reflexivity means considering how the researcher's position, assumptions and relationship with participants shape data collection and interpretation. It is not a ritual confession that eliminates bias. It is a transparent practice that helps readers judge how knowledge was produced. Transferability likewise differs from statistical generalization: rich contextual detail can help readers decide whether findings may illuminate another setting.
Ethics as ongoing reasoning
Consent is meaningful only when participants understand relevant procedures, risks and rights. Confidentiality requires a plan for handling data, not merely replacing names in the final report. Protection from harm includes psychological discomfort, social risk and accidental disclosure. Vulnerable groups or sensitive topics require proportionate safeguards. When deception is methodologically justified, it should be minimized, reviewed, followed by debriefing and accompanied by a genuine opportunity to withdraw data where applicable.
Revising the biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches
Paper 1 requires breadth across all three core approaches. Build an integrated map of concepts, research and debates rather than three disconnected folders.
