How to use the IB Economics grade calculator
This calculator is designed for one specific task: estimating an IB Economics subject grade from component-level evidence. It does not calculate the full Diploma score, predict bonus points, or decide whether a candidate meets every Diploma condition. That narrower purpose is useful. It shows whether Paper 1, Paper 2, HL Paper 3 or the internal assessment is doing most of the work in your Economics result and where a realistic mark gain would have the greatest effect.
Choose SL or HL first because the weighting changes substantially. Enter raw marks from a complete, appropriately marked component. SL uses Paper 1 out of 25, Paper 2 out of 40 and the portfolio out of 45. HL uses the same maxima for Paper 1, Paper 2 and the portfolio, plus Paper 3 out of 60. Do not enter a classroom percentage into a raw-mark field. A score of 70% on Paper 1 is not entered as 70; it is approximately 17.5 out of 25, subject to how your teacher records raw marks.
Next, select a 2025 comparison session. The displayed percentage is the sum of the officially weighted component proportions. The large integer from 1 to 7 shows where that total sits in the chosen final boundary table. The supporting message identifies the distance from the lower edge of the current band and the next grade. Switch between recent sessions to see whether the estimate is stable or sensitive to boundary choice.
Use teacher-marked scripts where possible. Self-marking can help diagnose content, but evaluation marks depend on quality, balance, context and judgment. A memorized answer may feel fluent while missing the exact question. Store the date, time conditions, paper source and marker beside each score. Only compare results completed under similar conditions.

IB Economics assessment structure for 2026
The 2026 examination uses the Economics course first assessed in 2022. The official IB Economics overview, updated in February 2026, confirms two external papers at SL, three at HL, and a portfolio of three commentaries at both levels. The course covers introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy. Nine key concepts connect theory to current issues: scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention.
There is no new 2026 assessment pattern to import from an unrelated subject. For Economics, the 2022 course remains current through 2026. The official subject briefs list first assessments in 2022 and currently state last assessments in 2029. Students should still follow their school's guide, authorized materials and exam timetable, but the component model below is the appropriate basis for a 2026 calculator.

Why the raw maxima matter
The components cannot be added without scaling. An HL raw total of 18 + 30 + 42 + 34 = 124 is out of 170, but the ratio \(124/170\) ignores the 20:30:30:20 weighting. Paper 3 has 60 available marks and the IA has 45, yet each contributes a different proportion. The calculator converts each score to its component percentage before applying the official weight.
The supplied earlier calculator treated HL Paper 3 as if it were out of 45. That would overstate every Paper 3 mark because the denominator would be too small. A score of 40/60 is 66.7%, contributing 20 weighted points to a 30% component. Treating it as 40/45 would incorrectly create 26.7 weighted points. The corrected tool uses 60 throughout its input limits, formula, accessibility labels and worked examples.
IB Economics SL and HL grade formulas
Let \(P_1\), \(P_2\), \(P_3\) and \(IA\) be raw component marks. Let \(S\) be the overall weighted percentage before comparison with a final subject boundary. Each term is the component mark divided by its maximum, multiplied by the component weight.
Standard Level formula
This simplifies to a convenient raw-mark conversion:
Suppose an SL candidate earns 17/25 on Paper 1, 27/40 on Paper 2 and 32/45 on the portfolio. The weighted contributions are \(17\times1.2=20.4\), \(27\times1=27\), and \(32\times2/3\approx21.33\). The total is approximately 68.73%. Against May 2025 TZ1, where Grade 6 began at 64 and Grade 7 at 75, the estimate is a 6.
Higher Level formula
In weighted points per raw mark:
For an HL example, take 18/25, 29/40, 42/60 and 34/45. The contributions are 14.4, 21.75, 21 and approximately 15.11. The weighted total is about 72.26%. Under May 2025 TZ1 HL boundaries, that is a Grade 6: the lower boundary was 65 and Grade 7 began at 77.
What one additional raw mark is worth
At SL, one Paper 1 mark adds 1.2 weighted points, one Paper 2 mark adds 1.0, and one IA mark adds about 0.667. At HL, one Paper 1 mark adds 0.8, one Paper 2 mark 0.75, one Paper 3 mark 0.5, and one IA mark about 0.444. These multipliers describe arithmetic, not difficulty. Gaining one Paper 1 mark may require a better explanation or evaluation point, while gaining several Paper 3 calculation marks may come from correcting one repeated method error.
Do not conclude that Paper 3 is unimportant because each raw mark has a smaller multiplier. It contains 60 marks, so the entire paper contributes 30% at HL. The smaller per-mark value reflects the larger raw scale. A 10-mark improvement still adds five weighted points, enough to move a borderline candidate across many recent grade boundaries.
Rounding and safety margins
The calculator retains the underlying decimal and displays one decimal place. Historical boundaries use whole weighted marks. Do not build a strategy around whether 63.6 might be treated as 64. Component scaling, moderation and official processing are not reproduced in a simple web estimator. Aim three to five points beyond a recent threshold, particularly when your target grade has moved across sessions.
Latest Economics grade boundaries for 2026 planning
Final 2026 boundaries do not exist before the examinations are marked and standards are reviewed. The newest completed comparison sets available here are May and November 2025. They show how recent performances translated to 1-7 subject grades in specific time zones. They do not guarantee the same thresholds for May or November 2026.

Grade 1 begins at 0 and Grade 7 ends at 100 in every listed final table. These are final subject boundaries, not individual component boundaries.
Why the selected boundary changes the result
At SL, the Grade 7 lower boundary ranges from 75 to 81 across these 2025 sets. At HL it ranges from 76 to 79. The Grade 6 SL boundary ranges from 64 to 69. A candidate scoring 66 could look like a stable 6 under May tables but a 5 under both November sets. The calculator makes that uncertainty visible instead of hiding it behind one cutoff.
Differences do not mean one time zone awards an easier qualification. Papers can differ, and boundary setting supports comparable standards. Do not choose the lowest historical table because it produces a more attractive prediction. For revision targets, use the strictest recent boundary relevant to your level. For honest reporting, describe the range.
Turning a target grade into component marks
"I want a 7" is motivation, not a complete plan. A productive target names a weighted threshold, adds a margin, locks any finished component, and assigns the remaining gain to exam behaviors. Begin with three scenarios: conservative, expected and strong. Enter each across multiple boundary sets. The spread shows whether your grade is resilient or depends on every assumption going well.
Plan with the weighted gap
Suppose an SL estimate is 61 and you want a secure 6 against a planning threshold of 69. The gap is eight weighted points. Possible gains include four additional Paper 1 marks and four Paper 2 marks, adding \(4(1.2)+4(1)=8.8\). If the IA remains open, three more IA marks add two weighted points, reducing the exam requirement. Once the portfolio is submitted, keep that estimate fixed.
At HL, imagine a current total of 71 with a Grade 7 target of 79. An eight-point gap could be closed by two Paper 1 marks, four Paper 2 marks and seven Paper 3 marks: \(2(0.8)+4(0.75)+7(0.5)=8.1\). That is not a prescription. Review marked scripts to decide whether those raw improvements are realistic. A repeated quantitative error may make seven Paper 3 marks more attainable than two high-level evaluation marks on Paper 1.
Grade 4 target
Prioritize accurate definitions, recognizable theory, correctly labeled basic diagrams, complete calculations and direct use of data. Paper 1 answers should distinguish explanation from evaluation. Paper 2 responses should quote or manipulate the supplied data rather than rely only on memorized content. HL Paper 3 candidates should show every calculation step and make a policy recommendation that addresses the data.
Grade 5 target
Move from naming to explaining chains of reasoning. When demand increases, state why, show the rightward shift, identify the new equilibrium and analyze effects on price, quantity and stakeholders. Use current examples with enough detail to demonstrate relevance. Evaluation should identify conditions, time periods, elasticities, stakeholder conflicts or unintended consequences instead of repeating "it depends."
Grade 6 target
Build consistent application and analysis across units. A strong Paper 1 essay uses a real-world example throughout rather than attaching it to the conclusion. Paper 2 integrates the extract, calculations and diagrams. At HL, Paper 3 moves from a correct policy diagram to a contextual recommendation weighing trade-offs. Practice under time so quality survives the full paper.
Grade 7 target
Top-band work is selective, precise and judgment-led. It does not include every theory memorized. It chooses the model that answers the question, states assumptions, applies specific evidence, evaluates alternative outcomes and reaches a supported conclusion. Because recent top boundaries are high, a Grade 7 plan needs strength across components. A brilliant essay cannot reliably offset missing Paper 2 data use or large Paper 3 calculation losses.
Paper 1: extended-response strategy
Paper 1 is a 1 hour 15 minute extended-response paper worth 25 raw marks. It contributes 30% at SL and 20% at HL. Questions are based on all syllabus units. The exact choice structure should be practiced using current papers and teacher guidance, but the central skill is stable: explain economic theory clearly, then use real-world examples to evaluate a broader proposition or policy.
A typical pair separates a shorter explanation from a longer evaluative response. Budget time in proportion to marks, not comfort. Candidates often over-invest in the first explanation because drawing a familiar diagram feels safe, leaving too little time for evaluation. Use timed practice to choose an allocation that includes reading, planning and a final check.
Build the explanation as a causal chain
Define essential terms, state assumptions where relevant, draw and label the diagram, and explain each movement in words. Do not say "the curve moves" if the economic distinction is a shift. Identify the determinant and direction. If the question concerns a price ceiling, state that it is set below equilibrium, show quantity demanded exceeding quantity supplied, and explain the shortage and possible allocation consequences.
The demand, supply and equilibrium guide can support foundational revision. Use it to test whether you can reproduce the mechanism closed-book. The examination rewards your own accurate application, not recognition while reading.
Use real-world examples as evidence
A useful example identifies a place, policy or market, an approximate time, and the economically relevant result. "A country used a tax" is too vague. You do not need to memorize an encyclopedia of statistics, but you should know why the example supports or challenges the argument. Update examples before the examination, and avoid invented precision. A defensible directional outcome is safer than a false decimal.
Create an example bank organized by syllabus issue and evaluative function. One carbon-tax example may show internalization of an external cost; a second may illustrate competitiveness or distributional concerns. A central-bank episode can demonstrate transmission lags, exchange-rate effects or constraints when inflation has supply-side causes. Reuse examples flexibly without forcing them into unrelated questions.
Evaluation requires a criterion
Evaluation is more than listing advantages and disadvantages. Decide what "effective" means: lower inflation, higher real output, improved equity, sustainable resource use or greater economic well-being. Then compare outcomes against that criterion. Include short run versus long run, magnitude, elasticities, information gaps, administrative costs, stakeholder impacts and alternative policies where relevant.
A strong conclusion answers the exact command term. "Therefore, the policy is good" is not enough. State under which conditions it is likely to work, which limitation is decisive, and whether a complementary measure would improve the outcome. Judgment should emerge from analysis rather than appear as an unsupported final opinion.

Paper 2: data-response strategy
Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 40 marks at both levels. It contributes 40% at SL, making it the largest external component, and 30% at HL. The paper tests the full syllabus through data, extracts, short questions, calculations, diagrams and longer responses. It rewards students who combine theory with the material provided rather than writing a generic essay beside the extract.
Read for economic signals
Before answering, identify the economy or market, the time period, changes in key variables, policies mentioned, stakeholder effects and any tensions between objectives. Mark units in tables. A change from 4% to 6% is a two-percentage-point increase but a 50% relative increase. Confusing those descriptions can undermine later analysis.
Use data explicitly. If the extract says the currency depreciated while export revenue changed, refer to those facts when analyzing competitiveness and elasticity. If inflation and unemployment move together, do not automatically claim causation. Explain the relevant model and acknowledge other factors. Paper 2 is not a search-and-copy exercise; evidence must be interpreted through economics.
Short definitions and calculations
Give concise, accurate definitions with the distinguishing feature. For an indirect tax, identify that it is imposed on expenditure on goods or services, not merely "money paid to government." For economic growth, distinguish an increase in real output from a rise in the price level. Do not add an example that contradicts the definition.
For calculations, write the formula, substitute values, show working, include units and round sensibly. A correct final number with no method is harder to reward if a transcription error occurs. If the question requests a percentage change, use the original value in the denominator:
Data-response diagrams
Choose the diagram that explains the stated change. A depreciation caused by lower demand for a currency needs a foreign-exchange diagram with the demand curve shifting left. A fall in an exchange rate is not drawn on an AD-AS diagram unless the question asks about macroeconomic consequences. Use the extract to explain why the curve shifts and how the new equilibrium affects the issue.
Longer responses
Plan around the extract and command term. Use multiple pieces of data, but avoid quoting numbers without analysis. One paragraph might explain the intended mechanism, another a benefit supported by data, another a limitation or stakeholder cost, and a final one compare alternatives. Return to the stated country, market and period throughout.

HL Paper 3: calculations and policy recommendations
Paper 3 is exclusive to HL, lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, is marked out of 60 and contributes 30% of the final grade. It is a policy paper based on all units. Candidates work with quantitative material and use economic theory and data to recommend a policy. This combination makes the paper highly trainable: technical accuracy, structured working and contextual evaluation can improve through deliberate practice.
Secure the quantitative marks
Create a formula sheet from the current guide, then practice deciding which formula a question requires. Retrieval must include interpretation. Price elasticity of demand is:
The sign is usually negative because price and quantity demanded move in opposite directions, while discussion often refers to the absolute magnitude. If \(|PED|>1\), demand is elastic; if \(|PED|<1\), it is inelastic. Explain what the coefficient implies for the particular market, revenue or policy rather than ending at classification.
Income elasticity of demand and price elasticity of supply are:
Show the direction of change and units where appropriate. Check whether the data are percentages, index numbers, currency values, millions or billions. Estimate whether the answer is plausible. If price rises 5% and quantity falls 2%, an elasticity magnitude of 40 signals a decimal or denominator error.
Move from calculation to analysis
A calculation earns value when it informs the policy reasoning. Inelastic demand can mean an indirect tax raises substantial revenue, but it may also create a regressive burden if the good is a necessity. A large multiplier may strengthen the case for fiscal stimulus, but import leakages, crowding out, debt constraints and inflationary pressure still matter. Use numerical results as evidence, not decoration.
Recommend one policy clearly
A strong recommendation identifies the principal problem, states the chosen policy precisely, explains its mechanism with a diagram, uses the data, evaluates consequences and compares at least one plausible alternative. Avoid recommending "supply-side policy" without naming the instrument. Education spending, infrastructure, competition policy and labor-market reform operate through different channels and time frames.
Frame the judgment around constraints. If a country faces cost-push inflation and weak growth, contractionary demand management may reduce inflation but deepen the slowdown. A targeted supply measure could address capacity, but may take years. The best recommendation depends on urgency, fiscal space, administrative capacity, distributional goals and the cause of the problem.
Paper 3 checking routine
- Copy all numbers with units before calculating.
- Write the formula and substitute values.
- Round only at the end unless told otherwise.
- State what the result means economically.
- Use the result or data in the policy recommendation.
- Check that the diagram matches the recommended policy.
- Judge the policy against the country's actual constraints.
Economics internal assessment portfolio
The IA is a portfolio of three commentaries based on published news-media extracts. The commentaries come from different syllabus units other than the introductory unit and use different key concepts as lenses. The portfolio is marked out of 45. It contributes 30% at SL and 20% at HL. Because the same raw maximum carries different weights, one IA mark adds about 0.667 weighted points at SL and 0.444 at HL.
Your school controls deadlines, authentication, permitted teacher feedback and submission. Use the current guide and teacher instructions for exact formal requirements, including word limits, article dates, cover sheets and source details. A calculator can model the effect of a provisional mark; it cannot decide whether an extract or commentary meets IB rules.
Select an article with an analyzable event
The best extract contains a specific economic change or policy, affected stakeholders and enough context for theory. A broad opinion piece may mention many issues without giving one mechanism to analyze. Look for a tax, subsidy, regulation, interest-rate decision, fiscal measure, trade restriction, currency change or development strategy. The event should let you apply a diagram and evaluate consequences.
Choose the article because it supports independent economic analysis, not because it already explains every theory. If the journalist performs all the economics, your commentary may repeat the extract. Conversely, an article with almost no relevant facts leaves application weak. Aim for a clear event with data and stakeholder detail but room for your analysis.
Use the key concept as a lens
The concept should shape the commentary, not appear once in the introduction. Intervention can frame why government changes market outcomes and whether the result improves welfare. Equity can structure discussion of distributional effects. Sustainability can guide evaluation across generations. Interdependence can connect a trade or exchange-rate decision to multiple economies and stakeholders.
Analyze with an accurate diagram
Introduce the model, state assumptions, draw a fully labeled diagram and explain it in the article's context. Every curve shift needs a reason from the extract. If illustrating an indirect tax, label the original and post-tax supply curves, consumer and producer prices, quantities and relevant welfare or revenue areas when they serve the analysis. Do not insert a complex diagram that is never explained.
Evaluate rather than summarize
Identify short-run and long-run effects, winners and losers, uncertainties, elasticities, implementation constraints and alternative policies. Evaluation must remain tied to the article. A tax may reduce consumption more effectively when demand is elastic, but revenue may then be lower. A subsidy can increase consumption of a merit good, but its opportunity cost and targeting matter.

Diagrams, formulas and quantitative skills
Economics diagrams are arguments in visual form. They must correspond to the mechanism in the question. A graph earns little if axes are missing, curves are ambiguous or the written explanation describes a different movement. Practice drawing from a blank page, then explain the sequence aloud: initial equilibrium, determinant, curve shift, new equilibrium and stakeholder or welfare effect.
Demand, supply and elasticity
Distinguish a movement along a curve from a shift. A price change caused by a change in supply creates a movement along the demand curve; it does not shift demand. Demand determinants include income, tastes, related-good prices, expectations and number of consumers. Supply determinants include input costs, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies, expectations and number of firms.
Elasticity determines magnitude and incidence. The elasticities revision guide can help consolidate definitions and applications. In evaluation, explain why elasticity may differ by time, availability of substitutes, necessity, market definition and proportion of income. Avoid writing "demand is inelastic" without evidence or a reason.
Indirect taxes and subsidies
For a specific indirect tax, the vertical distance between supply curves represents the tax per unit. Government revenue can be calculated as:
Tax incidence depends on relative elasticities. The less responsive side of the market bears more of the burden. A subsidy creates a government cost:

Macroeconomic measures
Nominal GDP values output at current prices; real GDP adjusts for price changes. A common GDP deflator relationship is:
Per-capita values divide by population and improve comparison of average material output, but they do not reveal distribution, unpaid work, environmental costs or non-material well-being. Real GDP growth can coexist with rising inequality. Evaluation should distinguish an indicator's measurement purpose from broader economic well-being.
The unemployment rate is generally expressed as:
Interpret labor-market definitions in the question. People outside the labor force are not automatically counted as unemployed. Underemployment and discouraged workers may make the headline rate an incomplete measure.
The multiplier
In a simplified open economy, the multiplier may be expressed using marginal propensities to save, tax and import:
The change in national income is then modeled as \(\Delta Y=k\Delta A\), where \(\Delta A\) is an initial change in autonomous spending. The model's prediction depends on spare capacity, leakages, confidence and the responsiveness of production. A calculated multiplier does not ensure the exact real-world change.
Exchange rates
In a floating system, demand and supply for a currency determine its value. Higher demand can appreciate it; lower demand can depreciate it. Consequences depend on elasticities, contracts, imported-input costs and time. The exchange rates and balance of payments guide provides focused practice for these links.
Keep the currency quotation consistent. If the diagram shows dollars per euro, a rise indicates euro appreciation against the dollar. If the reciprocal quotation is used, the visual direction changes. Label currencies on the vertical axis to remove ambiguity.
Revising microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy
The course is connected by scarcity and choice. Strong revision does not treat every subtopic as an isolated flashcard. Build chains that move from assumptions and models to outcomes, stakeholders, limitations and key concepts. For every unit, ask: what changes, through which mechanism, for whom, over what time, and according to which criterion?
Microeconomics
Master demand, supply, competitive equilibrium, elasticity, government intervention and market failure. HL adds further depth including asymmetric information, market power and equity. Start with clean diagrams, then add welfare analysis. When discussing externalities, distinguish marginal private and social costs or benefits, identify over- or under-allocation, and evaluate interventions.
Market failure answers should identify why the price mechanism misallocates resources. For negative production externalities, firms consider private costs but not external harm, so market output can exceed the socially efficient level. A tax may internalize the external cost, but setting the correct rate requires information and enforcement. Regulation may be clearer but inflexible. Tradable permits can limit total pollution but need monitoring and a workable market.
Behavioral economics challenges simple maximizing assumptions through bounded rationality, cognitive biases and choice architecture. Do not treat it as proof that standard models are useless. Evaluate which model explains the specific behavior and whether a nudge, information provision or regulation better addresses the issue.
Macroeconomics
Revise national income measurement, AD-AS, macroeconomic objectives, inequality, demand management and supply-side policies. The output and AD-AS guide can strengthen the base model. Be able to explain shifts in aggregate demand components and short-run or long-run aggregate supply, then connect them to growth, inflation, unemployment and distribution.
Policy evaluation begins with the cause. Demand-pull inflation may respond to contractionary monetary or fiscal policy, but cost-push inflation presents a trade-off. Expansionary policy may reduce cyclical unemployment when spare capacity exists, yet cause more inflation near full capacity. Supply-side policy can raise productive capacity, but effects may be slow, uncertain and unequal.
For monetary and fiscal policy, compare transmission, time lags, political constraints, debt, confidence, exchange rates and distribution. The global economy

A tariff raises the domestic price, supports domestic producers, reduces consumption and imports, generates revenue and creates welfare losses under the standard model. Development is multidimensional. Real GNI per capita can indicate average income, while composite indicators include health and education. Neither fully captures inequality, freedoms, security or environmental sustainability. Strategies should be judged against local institutions, geography, human capital, finance, governance and participation. Economic growth can support development but does not guarantee inclusive well-being.

How to write stronger economic evaluation
Evaluation becomes convincing when it changes the conclusion. A list of limitations followed by the original claim is not enough. Select the condition that has the greatest effect and explain why. If demand is highly inelastic, a tax may reduce quantity only slightly but raise substantial revenue and impose a larger consumer burden. That condition changes the policy judgment.
Use CLASPP selectively
Students often learn frameworks involving conclusions, long run versus short run, assumptions, stakeholders, priorities and pros and cons. Such prompts can prevent omissions, but they are not paragraphs to insert mechanically. Select the dimensions that fit the question. A stakeholder comparison is powerful for minimum wages; exchange-rate consequences may matter more for monetary policy; administrative capacity may dominate a development intervention.
State assumptions and relax them
Models simplify. The competitive market diagram assumes ceteris paribus and may abstract from information, market power or adjustment time. Begin with what the model predicts, then explain how relaxing a relevant assumption changes the outcome. Avoid dismissing every model as "unrealistic." The point is to understand what insight it provides and where application requires caution.
Compare alternatives fairly
If evaluating a carbon tax, compare it with regulation, permits, subsidies or information where relevant. Apply the same criteria: effectiveness, cost, equity, speed, enforceability and political feasibility. Do not present an alternative as perfect. A subsidy for clean technology may speed adoption but creates fiscal cost and risks supporting projects that would have occurred anyway.
Make the conclusion conditional
Good judgments often use "provided that," "in the short run," or "when demand is..." because policy outcomes depend on context. A conditional conclusion is not indecision. It identifies the evidence that would change the answer. Rank factors instead of saying all sides are equal.

Revision should combine retrieval, diagram production, calculation, current examples, timed writing and feedback. Reading notes can rebuild familiarity, but the assessment requires you to produce reasoning under time pressure. HL candidates should complete mixed Paper 3 calculation sets and policy recommendations. Mark immediately and rewrite the single paragraph or method causing the largest loss.
Week 11: full papers
Simulate the complete timing and allowed materials. Record raw marks, weighted result and boundary range. Compare performance by skill, not only unit. Exam technique and common scoring mistakes
Answering a neighboring question
Students recognize a topic and reproduce a prepared essay without respecting the qualifier. "Evaluate the effectiveness of monetary policy in reducing unemployment" is not a general essay on monetary policy. It requires a transmission mechanism, a definition or type of unemployment, conditions affecting effectiveness and a judgment about that objective.
Drawing without explaining
A technically correct diagram must be integrated into the answer. Refer to labels and movements: the tax shifts supply from \(S\) to \(S+tax\), raises the consumer price, lowers the producer price and reduces equilibrium quantity. Do not expect the examiner to infer your entire analysis from arrows.
Using vague examples
"For example, the US" is not an applied example. State the policy or event and relevant outcome. If exact statistics are uncertain, use cautious, accurate language. Never invent numerical evidence. Current examples should be refreshed because the course explicitly connects economics to real-world issues.
Confusing shifts and movements
A change in a good's own price causes movement along demand or supply, while a non-price determinant shifts the curve. In AD-AS, a price-level change creates movement along AD; changes in consumption, investment, government spending or net exports can shift AD. Use language that matches the diagram.
Dropping units and signs
A percentage, percentage point, currency, index or quantity is part of the answer. State whether an elasticity is positive or negative where relevant and interpret its magnitude. On Paper 3, carry full values through intermediate steps and round at the end unless instructed otherwise.
Generic "it depends" evaluation
Name what it depends on and how the condition changes the result. "The tax depends on elasticity" becomes useful when you explain that inelastic demand causes a smaller quantity reduction and places more burden on consumers, weakening a consumption-reduction goal but potentially increasing revenue.
No judgment
Evaluation points do not automatically create a conclusion. Decide which factor is most important in the stated context. A good conclusion can acknowledge uncertainty while still ranking policies or conditions. Do not add a new diagram or theory in the final sentence.

It uses the current 2026 component maxima and official weights for the course first assessed in 2022. The grade comparison uses final May and November 2025 boundaries because final 2026 boundaries are not available before grade award. The output is therefore a planning estimate, not an official result.
What is HL Economics Paper 3 marked out of?
Paper 3 is marked out of 60 and contributes 30% of the HL grade. Entering it as a mark out of 45 would overstate the component. This calculator uses the correct maximum of 60.

Compare several rather than choosing one favorable set. Use the stricter recent threshold to set a target and describe a range when your estimate changes grade. The actual 2026 boundary will depend on that examination session.
Can a strong IA make up for weak exams?
A strong portfolio helps, especially at SL where it contributes 30%, but it cannot replace exam coverage. SL external assessment is 70% and HL external assessment is 80%. Once the IA is submitted, treat its mark as fixed and plan the remaining weighted gap across papers.
How often should I update my predicted grade?
