What do the colors on the table mean?
The colors represent categories of elements with similar chemical and physical properties. For example, all Noble Gases are generally unreactive, while all Alkali Metals are highly reactive.
What are groups and periods?
Groups are the vertical columns (1-18). Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons and thus similar chemical behaviors. Periods are the horizontal rows (1-7). Elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells.
