Area Converter

Convert area units instantly across metric, imperial, U.S. customary, land measurement, real estate, agriculture, and geometry units. Convert square meters, square centimeters, square millimeters, square kilometers, hectares, acres, square feet, square inches, square yards, square miles, ares, barns, roods, square rods, bigha, biswa, kanal, marla, grounds, cents, gaj, and more.

Core idea: area measures two-dimensional surface. The SI area unit is the square meter \(m^2\). The conversion bridge is \(Value_{m^2}=Value_{input}\times Factor_{input}\), then \(Value_{output}=\frac{Value_{m^2}}{Factor_{output}}\).

What Is an Area Converter?

An area converter is a measurement tool that changes a surface measurement from one area unit into another. Area measures two-dimensional space: the space covered by a floor, field, wall, land plot, screen, roof, garden, map region, or geometric shape. This Area Converter supports everyday, academic, real estate, construction, land, agriculture, and scientific area units.

The most important reference unit is the square meter, written \(m^2\). A square meter is the area of a square that is one meter on each side. NIST explains area units visually: a square centimeter is \(1cm \times 1cm\), a square meter is \(1m \times 1m\), and a hectare is \(100m \times 100m=10{,}000m^2\). :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

This converter uses square meters as the bridge unit. Every input unit is first converted to \(m^2\), then converted from \(m^2\) to the target unit.

Area Conversion Formula

The general conversion method is:

\[ Value_{m^2}=Value_{input}\times Factor_{input} \]

\[ Value_{output}=\frac{Value_{m^2}}{Factor_{output}} \]

For example, to convert \(1\) hectare to square meters:

\[ 1ha=10{,}000m^2 \]

To convert \(1\) hectare to acres:

\[ acres=\frac{10{,}000}{4046.8564224}\approx2.4711 \]

Metric Area Units

Metric area units are based on powers of ten, but because area is squared, the jumps are larger than length-unit jumps. For example:

\[ 1m=100cm \]

\[ 1m^2=(100cm)^2=10{,}000cm^2 \]

This is the most common mistake in area conversion. You must square the length factor.

Imperial and U.S. Area Units

Imperial and U.S. area units are common in real estate, construction, land records, agriculture, and property descriptions. The most common are square inches, square feet, square yards, acres, and square miles. A square foot is the area of a square one foot on each side:

\[ 1ft^2=0.09290304m^2 \]

A square yard is:

\[ 1yd^2=0.83612736m^2 \]

An acre is:

\[ 1acre=4046.8564224m^2 \]

Land and Agriculture Area Units

Land area units are used differently by country and region. Hectares and acres are internationally common. Square feet and square yards are common in property listings. In South Asia, land records may use bigha, biswa, kanal, marla, ground, cent, and gaj. These regional units can vary by location, especially bigha and biswa.

This converter includes widely used practical defaults for several South Asian land units. For legal land transactions, always verify the official local definition used by the land authority, municipality, revenue department, or property registry.

1 mi²2,589,988.110336 m²640 acres

Shape Area Formulas

Sometimes the area is not given directly. Instead, you know the dimensions of a shape. The mini shape calculator on this page handles common shapes using these formulas:

\[ A_{square}=s^2 \]

\[ A_{rectangle}=lw \]

\[ A_{triangle}=\frac{1}{2}bh \]

\[ A_{circle}=\pi r^2 \]

\[ A_{trapezoid}=\frac{1}{2}(a+b)h \]

\[ A_{parallelogram}=bh \]

\[ A_{ellipse}=\pi ab \]

After calculating the shape area in square meters, you can send it to the converter and convert it to square feet, acres, hectares, square yards, or any other supported unit.

Why Area Conversion Is Squared

Length conversion is one-dimensional. Area conversion is two-dimensional. That difference matters. If \(1m=100cm\), then a square that is \(1m\) by \(1m\) is \(100cm\) by \(100cm\):

\[ 1m^2=100cm\times100cm=10{,}000cm^2 \]

This is why you cannot convert \(m^2\) to \(cm^2\) by multiplying by \(100\). You must multiply by \(10{,}000\).

Worked Examples

Convert \(1m^2\) to square feet

Since:

\[ 1ft=0.3048m \]

then:

\[ 1ft^2=(0.3048)^2m^2=0.09290304m^2 \]

Therefore:

\[ 1m^2=\frac{1}{0.09290304}=10.7639104ft^2 \]

Convert \(1\) hectare to acres

Since:

\[ 1ha=10{,}000m^2 \]

\[ 1acre=4046.8564224m^2 \]

Therefore:

\[ 1ha=\frac{10{,}000}{4046.8564224}\approx2.4711acres \]

Convert \(500ft^2\) to square meters

Since:

\[ 1ft^2=0.09290304m^2 \]

Therefore:

\[ 500ft^2=500\times0.09290304=46.45152m^2 \]

Convert \(1km^2\) to hectares

Since:

\[ 1km^2=1{,}000{,}000m^2 \]

\[ 1ha=10{,}000m^2 \]

Therefore:

\[ 1km^2=100ha \]

The SI unit of area is the square meter, written \(m^2\).

How many square meters are in one hectare?

One hectare equals \(10{,}000m^2\).

How many acres are in one hectare?

One hectare is approximately \(2.4711\) acres.

How many square feet are in one square meter?

One square meter is approximately \(10.7639ft^2\).

How many square feet are in one acre?

One acre equals \(43{,}560ft^2\).

How many hectares are in one square kilometer?

One square kilometer equals \(100\) hectares.

Why is area conversion squared?
