How to use this taxi fare calculator for any city
The calculator estimates a licensed taxi fare from the components you enter. It does not fetch a route, read a taximeter or replace the official tariff. Its advantage is transparency: every local assumption remains visible, including the initial charge, distance rate, time rate, minimum, surcharges, tolls, tax and tip.
- Select a profile or Custom. The NYC and Dubai profiles are current reference examples from official pages available in 2026. For another city, select Custom and enter its published tariff.
- Choose metered or flat fare. Metered mode calculates a core amount from flag fall, billable distance and separately entered slow or waiting time. Flat mode starts from an agreed or published amount.
- Match the currency and distance unit. Use miles with a per-mile rate or kilometers with a per-kilometer rate. Changing the label does not convert a numeric rate.
- Enter billable distance. A route planner can provide road distance, but a taximeter can use increments, detours and a distance/time crossover. Treat map distance as an estimate.
- Enter only time billed by time. In many meter systems, time replaces distance charging when the taxi is stopped or below a threshold. Do not multiply the full trip duration by a waiting rate unless the tariff explicitly charges both.
- Add trip-specific amounts. Include the exact night, rush, airport, booking, zone, road and toll charges that apply to the route and time.
- Set tax, tip and passenger count. Use zero where not applicable. The tip in this estimator excludes tolls, and the passenger split is for budgeting only.
- Compare the breakdown with the meter or quote. A large difference may come from an incorrect rate date, a wrong unit, traffic, an unmodeled surcharge or a different route.
Taxi regulation is local and can change. Search the transport authority, taxi commission, municipality, airport or licensed operator for the precise vehicle class and journey. A crowd-sourced price from another year is weaker evidence than the current tariff card displayed in the taxi.
Save a low and high scenario for uncertain trips. The low case can use a direct route and little waiting. The high case can add realistic congestion, an airport charge and every applicable fixed surcharge. A range is more honest than a precise single number when the route and traffic are unknown.
How a taxi meter actually calculates a fare
A taximeter converts regulated or authorized rules into fare increments. The display normally begins with an initial charge, sometimes called a flag fall, drop, flag-down fare or starting fare. As the vehicle moves, the meter adds distance increments. When speed falls below a local crossover threshold or the vehicle stops, it may add time increments instead.
Distance and time are often alternatives
The supplied page this guide replaces used a tempting but often inaccurate formula: base fare plus the cost of all distance plus the cost of all trip minutes. That method double-counts an ordinary moving trip when the meter charges distance at normal speed and time only while slow or stopped. A 20-minute journey does not necessarily contain 20 billable waiting minutes.
New York City's official standard-meter rule is a clear example. The meter adds $0.70 per one-fifth mile when traveling above 12 mph, or $0.70 per 60 seconds in slow traffic or when stopped. The word “or” matters. The calculator therefore asks for billable distance and slow or waiting minutes separately.
Meters charge increments, not infinitely smooth rates
A displayed per-mile or per-kilometer rate is often derived from a smaller increment. NYC's $0.70 per one-fifth mile is equivalent to $3.50 per mile, but the meter advances in $0.70 units. A continuous multiplication can differ from the meter near an incomplete increment. The estimator is intended for planning; the certified meter applies the actual rounding and switching logic.
Minimum fares
Some authorities set a minimum payable fare. A London black cab, for example, has a minimum fare even though the full taximeter uses time-of-day tariffs and changes rate after a distance threshold. A minimum is not an additional surcharge. It replaces a lower calculated meter subtotal:
Tariff switching
More complex meters can switch tariffs by time of day, day of week, holiday, distance band, speed, geographic zone or vehicle class. London uses several tariffs and changes the rate once a journey reaches approximately six miles. Reducing that structure to one universal per-mile number would produce a misleading estimate, so this page reports TfL's official typical-fare ranges instead of inventing a London preset.
What an app estimate does differently
An e-hail service may show an upfront price, a metered estimate or a price range based on predicted distance and duration. Its calculation can include booking terms, dynamic starting fares, route predictions and platform rules that are not identical to a street-hail meter. Read whether the displayed number is guaranteed, estimated or subject to changes in route, destination, tolls or waiting.

Tolls are excluded from the tax and tip bases in this general estimator. Local tax law, card terminals or personal tipping practice may use a different base. Set tax and tip to zero, calculate the regulated fare, and add the actual amounts separately if needed.
Flat-fare formula
For an agreed or published flat fare \(Q\), the estimator replaces the meter core with \(Q\):
Before adding anything, confirm what the flat fare includes. Airport flat rates may already include a meter surcharge but exclude tolls, or include one airport charge but not another. Adding an included fee twice defeats the purpose of the estimate.
Passenger split

New York City details
The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission lists a $0.50 MTA State Surcharge for qualifying trip destinations and a $1.00 Improvement Surcharge. It also lists a $1.00 overnight surcharge from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., a $2.50 rush-hour surcharge from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays excluding holidays, a New York State congestion surcharge for qualifying Manhattan trips, and an MTA congestion-pricing toll for a defined Manhattan zone. Airport rules add more possibilities; LaGuardia trips use the standard meter plus a $5 surcharge and other applicable charges.
The NYC preset preloads only the common $1.50 combination because night, rush, zone, airport, toll and route conditions are trip-specific. Use Regulated surcharges for the sum that actually applies. Check whether a quoted e-hail upfront fare already includes those charges.
London 2026 typical ranges
Transport for London's fare card effective 25 April 2026 sets a £4.40 minimum and reports typical ranges rather than a simple single rate. It shows approximately £8.40-£13.00 for a one-mile Tariff 1 trip lasting 6-13 minutes, £12.60-£20.20 for two miles lasting 10-20 minutes, £21.00-£31.00 for four miles lasting 16-30 minutes, and £33.00-£42.00 for six miles lasting 28-40 minutes. Tariffs 2 and 3 can be higher.
The same fare card states that phone, app and online bookings can add up to £2, while luggage, additional passengers and card payment do not add a charge. It lists airport extras and a £4 Christmas/New Year extra for specified periods. Because the meter responds to both time and distance within tariff stages, use TfL's range as the better planning tool.
Dubai 2026 details
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority explains that starting fares vary by road pickup, e-hail, airport, port, time and service type. Its service page updated 23 June 2026 lists AED 2.23 per kilometer for taxi fare and AED 0.50 per minute waiting. Its fare page lists regular road-pickup starting fares of AED 5 during 06:00-22:00 and AED 5.50 overnight. E-hail and airport starting fares differ.
The RTA formula includes the base fare, kilometer charge, waiting-time charge and applicable Sharjah, Port Rashid, Salik or DARB charges. The Dubai presets model road pickup only. Do not use them for airport, van, luxury, People of Determination, e-hail peak or another service without updating the inputs.
Enter distance and time without double-counting
Road distance, not straight-line distance
A map's straight-line separation is shorter than the route a car must follow. Use a route estimate that respects one-way streets, bridges, tunnels, restricted turns and pickup access. The related distance calculator is useful for general distance work, but a taxi estimate should use drivable route distance when available.
Match miles and kilometers
Never enter 10 kilometers with a per-mile rate. One mile equals 1.609344 kilometers. A 10 km route is about 6.2137 miles; treating it as 10 miles overstates distance by about 60.9%. Use the sitemap-confirmed miles-to-kilometers converter when the route and tariff use different units.
Estimate slow or waiting minutes
Start with expected trip duration, then estimate how much falls into the tariff's time-charged state. Red lights, queues, pickup waiting and heavy congestion can add time increments. Normal travel at a speed above the crossover is generally represented by distance increments in an alternating meter, not a second full-duration charge.
For a route with 25 minutes total duration, it may be reasonable to test 3, 8 and 15 billed slow minutes rather than entering 25 by default. The right range depends on the city rule and expected traffic. A time duration calculator can help convert scheduled pickup and arrival times into an elapsed-time planning figure.
Included distance
Some tariffs describe an initial fare that covers the first distance increment. Enter that amount in Included distance so it is not charged twice. Other tariffs treat the initial charge and subsequent increments separately from the first movement; use zero there. Read the wording rather than assuming every flag fall buys a mile or kilometer.
Increment rounding
Suppose a meter charges 0.20 currency units for every 100 meters. The smooth equivalent is 2.00 per kilometer, but a 1.04 km chargeable distance may trigger eleven increments rather than 10.4 continuous units, depending on the meter. This estimator uses continuous rates and can be a small amount below or above the certified meter near a boundary.
Detours and passenger requests
A requested stop, changed destination or passenger-selected route changes billable distance and time. Upfront quotes may also change under their terms. Recalculate the remaining scenario when the journey changes instead of treating the original estimate as a guaranteed cap.
Taxi surcharges, tolls, minimums, tax and tips
A good estimate separates core meter movement from fixed additions. This makes it possible to explain a difference and prevents the same fee from being added twice.
Time-of-day and peak charges
Night, rush-hour, weekend and holiday rules can be fixed amounts, different tariff rates or different starting fares. A London night ride uses a different tariff rather than a generic 20% multiplier. Dubai changes the road-pickup starting fare overnight. NYC adds fixed overnight and rush surcharges under specified conditions. Enter the structure actually published.
Airport and booking charges
Airport fees may apply to pickup, drop-off or both, and can differ by terminal or vehicle class. Booking fees may be capped or included in an upfront price. Ask whether the displayed quote already includes dispatch and airport charges before placing the amount in the Booking or airport field.
Tolls and road pricing
Tolls are route-dependent. Some cities pass the actual toll to the passenger; some use regulated toll amounts or congestion fees. The lowest-distance route may not produce the lowest total if it uses an expensive toll facility. Compare route time, meter movement and tolls together.
Minimum fare
A minimum fare protects a short-trip floor. Calculate the raw meter amount first, then replace it with the minimum if lower. Do not add the minimum on top of the raw meter. If the minimum applies to a broader subtotal that includes a booking fee, follow the local wording instead of this generic order.
Tax
Taxi prices may include tax, add tax separately or be exempt under local rules. Enter zero if the posted tariff already includes tax. If tax is separately payable, confirm whether it applies to the meter, booking charge, airport fee, toll or tip. The calculator's general tax field uses the fare before tolls and tip.
Tips
Tipping customs vary widely. In some markets a percentage tip is customary; in others rounding or no tip is normal. A card terminal's suggested percentages are optional unless local law or a clear service agreement says otherwise. This estimator excludes tolls from the tip base to avoid tipping on a pass-through road charge, but users can set tip to zero and calculate a custom cash amount.
Luggage and passengers
Do not assume an extra fee. TfL explicitly states no extra charge for luggage or additional passengers in London taxis, while other cities or vehicle categories can have different rules. Vehicle capacity and accessibility requirements still apply. Enter an Other charge only when authorized and applicable.
Metered fare versus flat, negotiated or upfront pricing
Metered fare
Changes with chargeable distance, slow time and tariff conditions. The certified meter is the primary record.
Regulated flat fare
A published amount for a defined origin and destination, often with separate toll or surcharge rules.
Upfront or negotiated fare
An agreed amount whose conditions should be confirmed before travel, especially outside a regulated meter zone.
When a flat fare is easier to budget
A flat fare reduces traffic uncertainty if the origin, destination and included charges are clear. It can be attractive for airport journeys or trips outside a meter jurisdiction. Compare it with a realistic metered range, not only a best-case traffic estimate.
Questions to ask before accepting
- Is the amount a guaranteed total, an estimate or a maximum?
- Are tolls, airport access, booking, congestion, tax and tip included?
- What happens if the destination, route or number of stops changes?
- Does waiting at pickup or during the trip add a charge?
- Is the fare per vehicle, per passenger or for a shared ride?
- Which vehicle class and luggage allowance are included?
- Can the passenger receive a written or app receipt showing the agreed amount?
Do not add included components twice
In Flat mode, enter the published or agreed core amount. Add tolls or surcharges only when excluded. If an airport quote says “all inclusive except tip,” leave booking, airport, toll and tax fields at zero unless the terms define an exception.
Upfront NYC quotes
NYC TLC states that participating licensed e-hail providers may offer upfront pricing for yellow and green taxis. The quote should include charges but can change if the destination changes or unexpected tolls or taxes arise. Treat the written app quote and its conditions as stronger evidence than reconstructing a meter from approximate traffic.
Plan the route and build a realistic taxi-fare range
Use low, central and high cases
A useful estimate is a range. Keep the official rate constant and vary uncertain operational inputs:
- Low case: direct road route, little slow time, no optional toll, only unavoidable surcharges.
- Central case: route planner distance, typical traffic for the departure time and known road charges.
- High case: plausible congestion, pickup waiting, airport access and a route disruption.
Do not inflate the tariff itself to create a high case. Change distance and waiting assumptions so the cause remains understandable.
Traffic can change both meter time and route
Congestion can add slow-time increments while navigation chooses a longer but faster road. A longer route is not automatically improper; it can reduce total time. Compare the trip with the route information available at departure, not with a hindsight route that benefited from later traffic data.
Pickup and drop-off access
Large airports, stations, event venues and pedestrian zones may force taxis to use designated access roads. The map pin can be close to the passenger while the legal vehicle route is much longer. Confirm the precise terminal, entrance, taxi stand and accessible pickup point.
Stops and waiting
Extra stops add distance and can add time while a passenger is away from the vehicle. If several riders have different destinations, model the complete ordered route. Dividing the original point-to-point estimate among passengers will understate the final trip.
When public transport or a transfer may be different
A taxi estimate answers a door-to-door licensed-taxi question. It should not be used as a generic transport comparison without including walking, transfers, luggage, group size, accessibility and operating hours. Likewise, a ride-hail quote can use different pricing and availability from a regulated taxi meter.
How to estimate an airport taxi fare
- Identify the exact airport and terminal. Pickup and drop-off charges can differ, and a terminal loop adds route distance.
- Confirm street taxi, official rank, prebook or e-hail. Starting and booking fares can differ even for the same vehicle type.
- Look for a regulated flat fare. Check the geographic boundaries, time rules, passenger class and included surcharges.
- Estimate the road route. Include airport access roads, toll tunnels, bridges and congestion zones.
- Add realistic waiting. Flight delays do not always equal chargeable taxi waiting; read the booking terms.
- Confirm luggage and vehicle size. A van or larger vehicle may use a different starting fare.
- Write down inclusions. Airport fee, booking, toll, tax and tip should each be marked included or excluded.
NYC airport examples
LaGuardia trips use the standard meter plus a $5 surcharge and all other applicable surcharges. JFK rules include flat-fare arrangements for defined Manhattan trips, with separate surcharge and toll provisions. Use the current TLC airport section for the exact direction, zone and time rather than entering an old flat amount from memory.
London airport examples
TfL's 2026 fare card shows a broad £70-£120 typical range between Heathrow and central London, depending on time and traffic. It lists £1.60 for journeys starting at Heathrow taxi ranks and up to £6 for terminal drop-off. London City Airport has a £6 drop-off extra under the 2026 update when the driver is charged it, with an exemption condition for qualifying Blue Badge holders.
Dubai airport examples
RTA lists an airport starting fare of AED 20 for a normal taxi and AED 25 for a van, rather than the AED 5 or AED 5.50 road-pickup flag fall. Select Custom or Flat and enter the airport starting conditions; do not use the road-pickup preset unchanged.
Use the official taxi rank, authorized booking channel or clearly licensed vehicle. Confirm the fare method before entering. Airport arrival areas are common places for confusing or unauthorized offers.
Budget for recurring, shared and business taxi rides
One ride estimate is useful for a passenger; repeated rides require a small budget model. A commute, medical appointment series, school transport plan or business travel policy can involve different tariff periods, waiting patterns and cancellation terms. Preserve those differences instead of multiplying one unusually cheap trip by the number of future journeys.
Estimate a recurring weekly or monthly range
Calculate low, central and high one-way fares, then multiply each by the expected ride count. If \(F_L\), \(F_C\) and \(F_H\) are the three fare scenarios and \(q\) is the number of journeys, the budget range is:
For ten one-way rides with estimates of 24, 29 and 37, the monthly planning range is 240-370 with a central case of 290. This is stronger than budgeting exactly 290 because disruption, weather and peak traffic do not occur identically every day.
Separate fixed and variable trip costs
Airport, booking and zone charges can apply once per ride while distance and slow time vary. If the same journey is made repeatedly, record the average distance component, average time component and frequency of each fixed surcharge. A route that is only slightly longer can still be cheaper if it avoids a toll or congestion zone.
Account for cancellations and pickup waiting
Prebooked services can have cancellation, no-show or included-waiting rules outside a standard street meter. Those are contract terms, not ordinary distance rates. For recurring transport, model the expected frequency and cost of missed rides separately. Do not add a full cancellation fee to every successful journey merely because it is possible.
Share one vehicle fairly
An equal passenger split is simple when everyone travels from the same pickup to the same destination. Multiple stops create different benefits and can increase both meter distance and time. Riders can agree to divide by equal shares, by individual route segment or by a hybrid rule. Record the method before travel when the amounts are material.
The calculator's per-passenger output divides one complete bill equally. It does not assign incremental costs to particular stops. If one rider adds a substantial detour, calculate the common route first, then the added leg, and decide how the group will allocate the difference.
Prepare a business travel estimate
A business estimate should identify the trip purpose, route, expected tariff, airport or booking fees, tolls, tax treatment, tip policy and currency. Keep the authorized tip separate from the regulated taxi fare. If company policy caps tips or disallows premium booking charges, reflect that policy rather than assuming the calculator's optional inputs are reimbursable.
After travel, reconcile the estimate with the itemized receipt and card statement. Foreign-currency card conversion can create a home-currency amount different from the taxi receipt even when the local fare is correct. Preserve both currencies and the conversion record.
Track recurring variance
For a repeated route, compare actual fare with the central estimate and categorize the difference: longer distance, more waiting, changed tariff, extra toll, booking charge or tip. After enough trips, update the traffic assumptions with observed data while retaining the current official rate. This creates a useful budget without pretending every future trip will match the average.
Do not optimize only for the lowest fare
Reliability, licensed status, accessibility, vehicle size, child-seat rules, luggage, pickup safety and arrival time may matter more than a small price difference. A fare estimate supports a travel choice but does not measure all service quality or safety factors.
Receipts, meter checks, accessibility and fare disputes
Before the ride
Confirm the vehicle is licensed, the driver and vehicle identifiers are visible, the meter is clear and the tariff code matches the time and service. Ask whether the ride is metered or flat and whether card payment works. Share trip details when appropriate and use the seat belt.
During the ride
Watch for an activated meter and a plausible route without distracting the driver. A meter can legitimately change faster in slow traffic because time increments replace distance increments. Ask a calm question if an unexpected tariff, surcharge or route appears.
Itemized receipt
Keep a receipt that identifies the taxi, date, pickup, drop-off, metered or flat fare, surcharges, tolls, tax, tip and payment total where available. It supports expense claims, lost-property searches and fare complaints. Photograph the vehicle number if the receipt does not identify it.
Compare like with like
A calculator estimate based on five waiting minutes cannot disprove a meter that experienced fifteen. Reconstruct the official rate, actual route, meter tariff, chargeable time and surcharges. A difference that remains after those checks is more useful in a complaint than a generic app estimate.
Dispute process
Do not put yourself at risk over a fare. Request the receipt, record details and use the local regulator, licensed operator or payment-provider process. Provide the factual breakdown and supporting screenshots. Emergency or safety concerns belong with the appropriate local authority.
Accessibility
Accessible service rules, assistance-dog requirements, boarding help and extra-charge prohibitions vary. Official guidance should be checked before travel. TfL, for example, states there is no extra charge for assistance dogs, luggage or additional passengers in London taxis. A fare calculator cannot determine vehicle suitability.
Privacy and device security
Use official booking apps, protect account credentials and verify the destination before confirming. Do not send card numbers or identity documents through an unverified message. Review saved payment methods and receipts after travel.

Example 1: NYC five-mile ride with five slow minutes
Use a $3 initial charge, $3.50 per billable mile, $0.70 per slow minute, and the $1.50 MTA State plus Improvement surcharge combination. Assume no other surcharge or toll:

Suppose a city has a 4.40 minimum, a 3.00 flag fall, and the short journey produces 0.80 of distance and 0.30 of waiting cost. The raw meter is 4.10, so the core becomes:
The correct result is 4.40 before separate extras, not 8.50.
Example 6: flat airport fare with excluded toll
An authorized flat quote is 70.00 and excludes a 6.00 toll. With no tax or tip, the total is 76.00. If the quote already includes the toll, entering it again incorrectly produces 82.00.
Example 7: tax and tip
A custom fare subtotal before toll is 40.00, tax is 5%, tolls are 4.00 and the rider selects a 15% tip. This calculator gives tax of 2.00 and tip of \(0.15(40+2)=6.30\). Total is \(40+2+4+6.30=52.30\).
Example 8: passenger split
Four passengers share the 52.30 total equally. The budget amount is \(52.30/4=13.075\), displayed as 13.08 per person. The rounded shares should be adjusted by a cent so their sum equals the actual bill.
Example 9: unit mismatch
A 16.09344 km route equals 10 miles. If a tariff is $3.00 per mile, distance cost is $30. Entering 16.09344 as miles would predict $48.28, overstating the component by $18.28.
Common taxi fare calculation errors
Charging all distance and all duration
This is the most important error. Many taximeters alternate between distance and time based on speed. Enter only the minutes charged by time.
Using stale city rates
Taxi tariffs change. Confirm the effective date on the official source. London changed its minimum and tariffs in April 2026, and Dubai's RTA service information was updated in June 2026.
Using a street-hail rate for an app or airport
Booking channel and origin can change the starting fare. Dubai road pickup, e-hail and airport taxis are not one preset.
Mixing miles and kilometers
Match the route unit with the tariff unit. A numeric label change without conversion is not enough.
Adding the minimum instead of applying it as a floor
A minimum normally replaces a lower core amount. It is not a bonus surcharge.
Forgetting meter increments
A smooth per-mile calculation can differ slightly because certified meters advance in discrete distance or time units.
Leaving out congestion, toll or airport charges
The distance rate alone rarely represents the complete city fare. List every applicable addition separately.
Adding an included charge twice
Flat and upfront quotes may already include booking, airport or meter surcharges. Read the quote before populating fields.
Assuming every city expects a percentage tip
Tipping practice is cultural and local. Use zero when no tip is expected or calculate the chosen custom amount separately.
Treating the estimate as a guaranteed price
Traffic, route, waiting, tariff switching and destination changes affect a meter. The official meter or valid agreed quote controls.
